Where do the pounds come from?

Hi I'm new here. I am a life long yoyo dieter. 14 stone at 14, 9 stone at 21, 10.5 stone when I married at 34 and have bounced around between 10.5 and 12 stone for most of my married life, but hit 14 stone again in my late 50's doing a stressful, sedentary job. As soon as I retired 3.5 years ago the pounds fell off but over the last year a stone has crept back - I do 3 fitness classes per week, average 12,000 steps a day. No junk food though partial to occasional chocolate, glass of wine, cake and pudding, but not excessively. So I ask where do these pounds come from and why cannot I be the person who can eat any thing and never gain a pound?

Hi Babs,

Welcome to the Weight Loss NHS forum. It's lovely to see your photo, and I hope you'll enjoy being part of this community - it's a friendly and supportive place and I hope you'll find things to help you motivate you on your journey to lose those final pounds. Great that you do regular exercise and wow, 12,000 steps a day is great! Maybe join in the Kilometre Challenge - see the Pinned posts -there are a few there that might interest you.

Maybe join our Monday group weigh-in, if that appeals. You'd be very welcome.

Have a great week.

Thanks for the welcome. Looks like a great place for motivation, hints and tips.

Monday weigh in sounds good, I've lost 2.75lb in my first week (maybe just excess from my holiday the week before) but good motivation.

Unfortunately as you age your muscle mass decreases so your body uses less calories, even if you stay active. I learnt this the hard way by continuing to eat as if I was 40 into my 60's - hence my need of this forum to help me repair the damage!

Hello and welcome stepupbabs 😊

I am also a lifelong yoyo dieter and have finally accepted that if I ate what I wanted all the time I would be unable to live the life I want. 😕 I am on a long and slow weight loss journey but know I will never be able to return to previous eating habits. However, I do still enjoy my food, and treats, but I just need to keep an eye on things. 😊

This is a great forum, with lots of different stories from many different people but all wanting lifelong health and fitness 😊 There are also many who are successfully maintaining their healthy weight which is very encouraging 😊

Good luck and very best wishes 😊

Hello Anna61

Thanks for your reply. I've been reading posts on this site, looks like there are many others with similar problems.

Looking forward to following some of the tips others have posted to keep me motivated.

Hello, I too am one of several seniors here who gained a couple of spare stones in our fifties. Its not easy getting / staying slim in our sixties but it can be done. You CAN get back to a healthy weight it's not too late at all. I was 2st overweight age 61 , lost it age 62, and have maintained since ... now age 64. Lots of advice and support on this site if you follow the 12wk plan and retrain those habits to a healthier slimmer you 😊

Hi elliebath

Thank you for your comment. I certainly have not given up on trying to lose weight but just need to ensure that I maintain it when I get there this time. At the fitness group I attend 3 times per week a good percentage of the members are over 60, some are slim and never put on a pound, whilst others like myself struggle despite several sessions per week. This site certainly looks like a good way to get tips and stay focused. I started the 12 week plan last week so just about to approach the scales - wish me luck.
