Ladies, does anyone pilled up the pounds after having the Merina coil inserted? Or it's just me using it as excuse? I have polled 2 stones since I have it inserted and I cannot justify it! Other thing is since then, looking weight has been a nightmare...

Hi Gih_Sil

I don't have or need these things, but did find this on the web, which may be of interest to you.

mirenaweightgain.com

Part if the way down the page it says about Mirena weight gain and under that, how to prevent Mirena weight gain.

Hope it helps.

I had 3 mirenas and didn't have that problem. Sorry. Def go back to your dr I would say.

Gih_Sil, I've had a Mirena more than 2 years now and have definitly noticed my weight gradually creeping up since then. Before my weight was stable and now I've put on at least a stone without changing my diet or exercise.

I had a mirena fitted as an alternative to the pill, as I felt the pill was contributing to weight gain for me. I didn't have a perfect first few months after the mirena was first put in, had it checked a few times and definitely felt my stomach was a bit swollen, so maybe what you're experiencing is water retention. But I did manage to lose over 2 stone with it fitted and I definitely believe it's stopped hormonal swings which were causing me all sorts of problems before. I went back to my doc a few times at the start so if you need advice go back to yours. Good luck :)

Hi Gih_sil. I have just had my second one fitted and yes, it does take a while for things to settle down. Your cycle probably needs a couple of months to get into its routine and a lot of the weight will be fluid/bloating probably. It might be tricky to start losing weight but getting into the 12 week plan and exercise can't hurt and once things have calmed down it will probably fall off! Am hoping that this happens for me too... good luck.

Hi,

I had my mirena taken out in 2008 as I believed at the time, it had contributed to a stones weight gain. After removal, I had the non hormonal one fitted and piled on a further stone and a half! Then in the last year I have gained a further 11lbs. My belief is while contraception is not blameless for weight gain, it doesn't do that much damage ( antidepressants DO though!). The most negative factor I found with the mirena was, I didn't have a period for 2.5 years, so I never knew if I was pre menstrual hungry, or just being a pig.

I did feel very safe on the mirena though. My son was conceived with the normal coil, my daughter on the pill, so maybe keep dieting, and see how things pan out.

Best wishes, hope you get things sorted.
