Still here and losing! And something about food allergies!

Hi All

For those of you who remember me you may have assumed I had yet again gone off the rails and left the forum to plunder the local sweet shop.

Never! Well - not this time at least.

I have just been really busy with the new job and compared to the last job - where I sat on the net all day! - its hectic but great to be up and moving around. I'm working for a pathology lab and basically drive to the same hospital 3 times a day, stopping at 3 places along the way to collect samples and then go back.

Its not too strenuous, I am out in the daylight all day and the money is good so am very happy about it. The only challenge is forming friendships at work as all the people I work with are always on the road and I only see the receptionists at the places I visit for a split second BUT all in all its a wonderful change and I am very grateful to my friend for getting me the job when I was despairing that anyone would hire me because of my size.

It IS busy though so I have to be organised and take my lunch and snacks with me.

I have lost around 8 kilos in the last 3 weeks which I am really happy with and my fitbit is telling me I am hitting around 11,000 steps a day, mainly because hospitals are ginormous and I have to do a lot of walking once I get to places so that works well.

I will call in for weigh in this week on Monday :)

FOOD ALLERGIES

I heard Dr Oz on the radio the other day and he said something that was quite simple but made a lot of sense.

Apparently it's not actually our stomach that processes food but the bacteria in our stomach that does the work so if our gut bacteria is not healthy we won't be.

"Prebiotic" food is the best food to eat for your gut's health and helps immensely with bloating etc.

These foods include onion, almonds, asparagus, banana, citrus fruits and a bunch of other things.

I had been having problems with bloating for months and I started eating oranges and tangelos every day (just because I liked them and they are in season) and within a few weeks I felt like a new man - I suspect it was the pectin in these foods.

Probiotics help to increase the amount of bacteria in your gut and intestine but prebiotics are more important because they ensure you have HEALTHY bacteria.

He also said that when you are not eating a healthy diet (as most of us have not in our lives ) this is when food allergies may start to occur because the bacteria is not capable of breaking down lactose, wheat etc. whereas healthy bacteria is able to cope with these things. And the longer we eat a bad diet the more likely we are to succumb to food allergies which then explained why people in their (for example) 50's could suddenly become dairy intolerant or celiac.

Anyways thought I would share that as it made sense to me once it was explained.

Hope you're all well and losing and will catch up with you all over the coming days.

D

Hi Dave, glad to hear you're back on track and losing weight again. It's always hard to face the scales and realise that we have once again regained the few kilos we'd lost, so difficult to then gather ourselves and start again. Congrats to you for losing 8 kilos, that's a brilliant start and must make you feel inspired to keep going. The new job sounds great, I'm so happy to hear things are going well for you. Yvonne

Hi queenie-duke,

Great to hear from you too. How are you ??

😇

Hi Dave, that makes sense to me. I've been reading about possible causes of my dairy intolerance and it's apparently a common result of gastroenteritis, which I had as a result of stress + alcohol 4 years ago. It makes sense that we need to get the bacteria healthy in the first place. From your list I have lots of onions, ground almond and satsumas, so I must also be naturally gravitating towards prebiotic foods, but I'll try to find out more. Great to hear about the job, the vanishing kilos, the general improved state of things. Things sound good :)

Hi Dave,

I really enjoyed reading your post this morning. Great that your new job is working out so well, and that you're enjoying it. Your information about prebiotics and probiotics is really good - I am interested in that side of things, and have been trying to promote my healthy bacteria for a while.

Hope you have a great weekend and it'll be great to see you in the Monday group weigh-in tomorrow! :-)

Great to hear your new job is going well and and so is the weight loss, and you're getting plenty of steps in 😊 Thanks for the interesting article, luckily I eat a lot of the foods you mentioned.

Hi Dave,

Great to hear from you😃 So happy to hear that your life has turned round for the better and it sounds as if you are going great guns !

Friendships will come even a few minutes small talk builds bridges😃

I did like your post re food allergies I do think there is something in it, it's something I've been researching for a few weeks. For me I've discovered can't eat any of the onion family that includes garlic !! Hard adjusting food to taste but getting there !!!

Enjoy your week, how's the garden ?

😇

Did you gather one probiotic was better than another? I am trying to cope with dieting and avoiding known triggers for IBS at the same time. Just starting the second attempt at the NHS 12 week diet I need to get off 10lbs again.

If you are interested in improving the health of your gut bacteria, try some traditional fermented foods as well, like natural live yoghurt.

I'm a bit worried that Dr Oz may be confusing allergies and intolerances. Lactose intolerance becomes more common with age as we stop producing the enzyme to digest lactose. Three quarters of the world's population are naturally lactose intolerant.

Also Celiac disease is not an allergy, it's a genetic autoimmune disease which can develop at any age. It seems it may be triggered by over-use of antibiotics, serious illnesses, operations, or perhaps certain bacteria damaging the lining of the gut.
