Serious about controlling food i eat.

Hi. I'm Becky from the south west UK.

I joined a year ago, but this is my first post.

I wanted to share with you my story about food and wanting/needing to loose weight.

I'm peri-menopausal for the last 2-3 years. And over that time i've put on extra 2 stone.

The autumn as i weighted myself, i had gone up another 3llbs.

I thought i've got to try and do something about this. I had just recently had to go up another clothes size. And i was just feeling hopeless.

That's when i decided to get serious about it, and try and help, information about how to loose weight.

I came across the 'count calories in order to loose weight. '

I had counted calories before years ago, but yes it wore off.

This time i felt motivated to make a change.

I wanted to out about calories and how many you needed, and how many you needed in order to loose some weight.

I have been also active with exercise for a year on and off, lane swimming mainly twice a week. As it's easy on your bones and joints. I have chronic knee pain and am an asthmatic.

I wanted to find a website where i could count my calories i eat, and also be able to login any exercise that i do.

I ended up finding this website called: loseit.com

And it is just the best. If you stick with the free version it is totally free. And each day it gives you Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Snack sections. And you type in what food you ate, and it will give you a list of the foods, and you can adjust the weighting scale size yourself in order to get the proper calories in the food you ate.

It also which i love, gives you the option to do a custom 'create your own food.' And it logs your entry into the food database, so every time you eat that same food it will come up in the list and you just click on the list and it will go into your daily section food you've eaten. And it counts all your calories you've entered as you do it. And there is a scale bar which shows you how many calories you've eaten. So you can track how you're doing during the day.

You can also set yourself goals on this website.

So if you wanted to loose a stone. You make a new goal and enter it, it will ask you for you weight and it will give you an estimate date of when you will be loose that stone.

You can also enter what exercise you have done during the day, and it then deducts the calories of the exercise you've done and it takes it off the calories you've eaten so far. Or it reduces the calories for the day, so you would have many more calories that you could eat for that day and still be within your calorie recommend limit.

You can set your calorie limit to what ever you like, like if you don't want to have more that 1000 calories a day, but it is a sensible website and it offers you sensible suggestions of what your healthy calorie intake for the day should be.

But you will still be able to loose weight, like a 1-2 lbs a week.

I am so glad i found this website, and it's so user friendly which and simple to use, which i love friendly and simple things to use.

Last week for the first week using Lose it website i weighted myself and i had lost 4 lbs in a week... I was only expecting to loose 1 lb. I was amazed.

You can then adjust and alter your weight on the website and it then calculates and adjusts your goal to a nearer date, as you loose weight.

Obviously the website loseit.com doesn't loose the weight for you, you have to do that yourself.

But what i've found is by being able to see how many calories i've been eating during the day. I feel more in-control of what i'm eating. and i also drink much more fluids, i have pints of squash during the day, and that helps make me not hungry for food.

But to be honest I look online for help, if i don't know how many calories are in the food i've just eaten, i will weight the food, and then google it.

And so far Google quick food entry search has always come up with how many calories is in that much weight of food.

I also look on the back of food packets, to find out how many calories are in a slice, or half a slice of something etc.

I do feel much more in control of what i'm eating. I've also noticed when i do snack on food, it is controlled snacking, not just not knowing how many calories i'm eating so i end up cooking big dishes of food and eating them and not worry about anything.

That is how i ended up putting on alot more weight.

So now im more informed and aware of what i'm doing, and i'm seeing the difference on the scales.

I wanted to write this to share with you what's been going on for me, and to share with you the great website 'loseit.com' which i've found and use it religiously.

It's fun to use it too. I look forward to entering the good and exercise i've done on that day.

Great Becky , I have just been told I have a lot of weight to lose so I would like to track what I am eating as I just don't know where all the calories are coming from (probably some self denial as well).

You could also download an app, like myfitnesspal, which a lot of people find useful, but don't be guided by their calorie allowance, it will be way too low and could lead to a stall in your weight loss. I am glad it is working for you.

Try it for a few weeks, and check that you are losing one to two pounds a week, and adjust if necessary.

Yes i don't plan on changing my eating style now. I did feel extra low yesterday and i did eat slightly abit more, but i didn't go mad. It's the 2nd week of using the website now and of doing calorie counting and it seems to be agreeing with me. Yes thanks for you advice, i will adjust it if i need to. But first week on it, i eat not enough, and i did too much exercise and it made my body quite unwell, fatigue, and irritability. So i balanced it out more. :-)

How about you, do you count calories? And trying to loose weight.

I was not concerned about you losing four pounds the first week or two, as it is quite "normal" to lose about half a stone of fluid etc. when you start trying to lose weight.

Counting calories works for many people, and is recommended here... and, initially, it lets you know what makes you fat, and how much you need to eat.

...but I have always been able to lose weight without counting anything.

I now have an Apple Watch which counts steps and kilometres, and tells me that I burn more than 3,000 calories a day if I walk more than 10,000 steps a day... but I was able to lose one pound a week when I was disabled and unable to exercise.

hi becky and thanks for your story! I am starting again on the weight loss journey and though I know how to do it, I seem to refuse to do it. I don't know where this refusal is coming from... I wonder if I should seek out counceling? anyway, I am going to check out this website and see if I cant do something.

Hi Katy. Nice to read your reply. I know what you mean. Do you feel like you have a mental block which is stopping you from doing it? I've had counselling/psychotherapy for several things over the years. You must follow your heart what it tell you. If you think you can't do it by yourself i know about that. I've struggled with that for along time. And in the past i have sort counselling and psychotherapy. And it did help me to help explore things in me that weren't out in the open and i didn't know about, about me. You mentioning the it, makes me feel you've been thinking about it.

Have you been to counselling before?

Yes the website loseit.com for me is very easy to use and simple. I checked out the one the other lady recommended to The GigGuy 'myfitnesspal.com' but for me i still prefer the loseit.com one at the moment.

If you need support i will be here to listen, and help if i can.

I checked out loseit.com and I am excited to try it. I weighed finally last night and discovered I only gained 7 pounds over my 3 months off work instead of the 25+ I thought I gained back. I am so happy! I have been in counseling for about 12 years so I guess I need to talk to my dr and explain the specific weight loss block I seem to have. good luck to us both! ps... I tried MyFitnessPal too but as I cannot exercise much yet, it did not do me much good either

Well done, i'm happy for you... :-) How nice it must be to think you put on much more than you actually have.. That's brill. You must have been doing something right, without you knowing about it. :-)

I looked at the myfitnesspal website again today. And there is just so much to it, that seemed abit overwhelming. With it talking about protein, fat, and carbs allowance. I hadn't even thought about that. Hope you can get back to some exercise soon for your own well being. :-)

But i have been today, and trying to get my head around it. It still confuses me about needing to burn off more calories than you eat. I understand the principle but still need to do more research.

So you're experienced too in counselling/psychotherapy. We are out hats at it. Good you can see you might have a block about it, i know i have a block about something else which also i am trying to get counselling to try and work through.

hey just remember that exercise is only like 20% of losing weight the other 80 is attitude and eating right. that makes it much easier. I would like to keep in touch for sure. I hope whatever you are working on gets easier with time. you can do this girl!

Only that much. I thought the exercise was a big part of losing weight. I now for long term weight reduction it takes change of mind about food and yes attitude. Thanks, hope that you find it easier too over the time, weeks, months, years.

It's all up to me i know.. And everyone else are responsible for their own development.

Yes, Katy is correct, it’s approximately 80% diet and 20% exercise 😕. What does help me is realising just how hard I need to exercise to burn off the 200 calories I’ve just eaten in 10 seconds flat!!! (About 30 minutes cycling for example)

yeh that is all the exercise is part of your weight loss so I don't worry about not being able to exercise much due to my ankle. I am trying loseit.com and it is showing me how many cals I eat in a day. what a wake up call! I did not adjust the first 2 days and I am amazed at the amount of junk I eat. I am going to try to eat better today
