I just ate quite a large date I got from the local Middle Eastern shop; then looked up calories.... SIXTY SIX EACH! I think that is probably at least! Good grief! What am I going to do with them all?! I thought they were good for me!

I love dates! I will buy them off you! :)

I never buy them any more as they are full of sugar and it is no good for me as I suffer from thrush.

I had the same shock so have stopped eating them for the time being. Couldn't believe how many calories a tiny little thing like a date could hold.... Maybe eat one per day - very very slowly as a treat ( - :

Chop a few into a traybake recipe instead of the usual tonnes of sugar. Deliciously Ella uses a lot of dates like this. I add them to banana cake/ grated apple flapjacks.

Dates are great. I know they seem calorific but al dried fruit is. But like all other dried fruit, they're high in fibre and a great healthy snack.

They also make a great substitute for flour / eggs in some baked goods.

Have a little browse around. I'm sure you'll find something to do with them, and if it's just chopping them into your cereals in the morning. Moderation is key, as always. 😉

What I think is good about them is I couldn't actually eat lots of them. One is enough. But I could eat a lot of chocolate ... or ice cream ... or cake .... You get the picture. I chop them into morning oats with a nut milk and a lot of chia seeds. I have a feeling I have grossly under-estimated the calorie content of this meal, but it does set me up and get me to lunch. I am interested in them substituting for flour or eggs (or is it and?) - I can see how they would work for sugar but not those. Interesting! I will check that out. All best to all. Smile.

The stickiness of blended dates kind of glues the mixture together in the same way eggs and flour would, so I think they serve a similar function, but obviously completely different flavours. They're used in lots of raw food recipes, full-on health-food-wizardry etc

I've used dry fruit purees to replace sugar and fat in some bakes. Don't forget, if you're chopping them up, to add to something, you can just have a half, if that is all you have left of your kcal allowance.

Hi Frankie53,

I think I'd be tempted to chop them up really small and use them to do some delicious baking of a healthy no added sugar fruit cake or something similar. Or sprinkle a few on your breakfast - maybe on porridge if you eat that. Or on Greek yoghurt - Mmmm, I think they are delicious too.
