North Pole Expedition - Kicking those Kms (walking, running, swimming, dancing etc.) Weekly progress on 30 November

In the quest to meet Santa, I went for an unexpected walk yesterday. Overall for last week, I did 39.3 kms. 👍👍 (My eating on the other hand has been dreadful but that's for the other thread!!)

So how did everyone else do? 😃😃😃

WTG Lizzie! That'll help those prunes out! :D

I've been a busy bee this week in order to reach my ultimate goals and of course get us to the North Pole, so:

Walking - 51.7kms

Cycling - 52.5kms

Total 104.2kms :) :) :)

As you can probably imagine, I'm quite pleased with myself :D

Hope everyone else has had a good week :)

Hi Lizzy

Thanks for making me get out yesterday in the wind and rain (really!).

Paces this week: 29842.

Must do better!!

Have a good week everyone.

That is a great result, Running Soon and so pleased you went out yesterday. I calculate your paces as 22.5 kms 😃😃😃

Good morning Lizzy,

I have just added my total for last week, and I'm very surprised - 75.1km 😲

Since starting the couch to 5km, I get out 3x a week on top of my walking every day. Just come back from my first week 3 run/walk glowing a lovely shade of red like Rudolph's nose- what a sight 😁

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to Elissy

Ha ha Elissy, I can certainly empathise with the Rudolph look :)

Your figures are great! WTG you! :)

in reply to Elissy

WTG Elissy. So pleased you are doing so well 😃😃😃

in reply to Elissy

I still go that shade of red after a run. Or as my bf describes it (in a worried tone) 'beetroot'!

Hey, I did 20km of walking this week :)

Nice one ScoobaSteve 😃😃

So I aimed for 60km this week however didn't manage- I only managed 48km however not all this was cycling some was walking which for me after my knee injury is a massive thing and I am over the moon!

I think this week I'll aim for 50km and try and add those 2km on :)

in reply to Wood05

Good to hear you're able to get back to walking again. I bet you are over the moon - well done 😃😃

Wood05 profile image
Wood05 in reply to

I am indeed! I dislocated and fractured my kneecap back in July and never thought it would take this long to get back on my feet or I would be this excited about it! Haha

It's been a long road with lots of complications so glad to be getting there!

morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to Wood05

WTG you Wood! :)

Fantastic result, but please don't overdo it, I'd hate to see you re-injure your knee.

I did OK until I got struck down with a bug, so my total for the week was 48kms.

This week should be better as I dug out my old pedometer and I will try and do 10,000 steps each day.

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to LessToLose

Sorry to hear about your bug LotToLose, but you still managed a big total :)

I hope your old peddy works better than my brand spanking new one did :)

LessToLose profile image
LessToLoseRestart April 2024 in reply to moreless

Thank you. I am a bit doubtful about this old pedometer, I have a feeling it misses steps and is very basic. Also the clip is weak and it falls off a lot!

So, I am in the market for a new one - what type did you get so I know what to avoid? Argos has some that works out your mileage and calories burned which sound amazing (but a bit pricey).

in reply to LessToLose

How about a Fitbit? I have a Fitbit Charge HR - love it! Would be a great Chrimbo present 😃😃

LessToLose profile image
LessToLoseRestart April 2024 in reply to

I am thinking about one of those, but felt a bit daunted by them as they look so technical.

Maybe after Christmas!

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to LessToLose

I've actually bought 2 recently and neither one of them is any good! The first was from Amazon, but actually came from Hong Kong. I bought it on recommendation from ScoobaSteve, who owns one that works perfectly, but which I can't remember the make of and the second my OH bought for me and is a karrimor. Both of them were in the £5 bracket and were also supposed to work out mileage, steps and calories.

To be honest, I find counting steps to be the most effective and reliable way to go :) It is a bit tedious the first time you do a particular walk, but after the first time, you already know the distance. However, I don't do my basic, just walking around type of steps, only specific walks. I hope that makes some sense to you :)

LessToLose profile image
LessToLoseRestart April 2024 in reply to moreless

Thanks, you are right, I can calculate my own mileage etc.

I have clipped mine to the inside of my coat pocket, so it only records my outdoor steps. I am finding it counts better there than when I clipped it to my bra.

Think I will stick with this one for the time being!

I've got a Garmin Vivofit. It's around £50 from Argos and is reliable. It doesn't require charging and you can wear it in the shower (it's a watch) so it's perfect for me.

You can synch it to your phone too so you can see how you've done day on day.

Very motivational. I'd recommend it.

LessToLose profile image
LessToLoseRestart April 2024 in reply to Keep_on_going

Oooh, that sounds interesting!

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to Keep_on_going

Excuse my ignorance, but do they work off mobile towers, or broadband wifi? I'm a techno numpty, so I may be asking something really stupid here :)

I guess what I mean is that I don't have a smart phone, because it won't work here and I have to use a dongle for my computer, does that mean that one of those Garmin Vivofit gismos wouldn't work here too?

in reply to moreless

There are small imps inside with maps, binoculars, compass & measuring tape that carefully correlate your exact position every 30 seconds and record it on their notepads. When asked how far you have walked in a day, they hold up small pieces of card with your score on... The only problem is that they don't like haggis and their legs look awful in a kilt, so won't go north of Hadrians Wall and therefore you probably won't get any reception.

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to

Bl**dy Sassenach gismos!!

You did amazing - well done 😃😃

Hi Lizzy,

I have 13 km of recorded walking to contribute - slowing down a bit because of the weather :(

Can't wait to get to Santa though!

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to sueper

Every kilometre counts Sueper and Santa's waiting for us :)

sueper profile image
sueper in reply to moreless

I do walk a little more than that honest - but I use a GPS watch and not a pedometer so every step is not counted.

Good old Santa I bet he can't wait to see us lot puffing away towards him :)

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to sueper

If truth be told, he's probably packed his suitcase and legged it to Florida! :)

Hi Lizzie and everyone. I've beaten my target of 45k with cycling alone but only did 1 run this week. Aiming to run at least twice this week, even if it's torrential rain for 7 days straight. Well maybe...

Cycling: 45.79k

Running: 8.04k

Total 53.83k :)

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to

I have to say Ruth, it's not much fun in the rain :)

I think your totals without such misery are more than adequate :)

in reply to moreless

Okay I'll blame you completely if I hate my dark rainy windy run this eve. Just now getting home to change then immediately go out again...

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to

Yikes! That hardly seems fair :(

You'll love it Ruth, you're going to have so much fun and those endorphins are going to be racing around your body. The feel of the wind in your hair, the chill on your cheeks. The mesmerising pattern of light on the puddles, the smell of log fires (erm, gas central heating}. The distant call of an owl (pigeon), children's soft laughter (as they graffiti that building)........................blah, blah, waffle, waffle, rhubarb, rhubarb............ ;)

in reply to moreless

I did I loved it so you're exonerated and what's more the rain even stopped :) Ran past the Blackwall Tunnel Northern Approach, the West Ham Bus Depot and a sculpture made of shopping trolleys. Also ran 3 times up and down the only stretch of canal I can find with lighting, so got a little bit of greenery but not much. Am walking home back up the A12 now... I'm sure your cooler climes are at least compensated for by much better scenery!

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to

I have to admit, it is beautiful here, in a wild and woolly way :) , although that can be forgotten when you're out in snow that's being blown horizontally and straight into your face :)

in reply to moreless

I guess snow in your face maybe kind of blocks the view a bit... At least I can SEE the crappy industrial estate as I run round it !

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to

I wouldn't swap my snow for all the crappy industrial estates in the world, I just don't do towns at all :)

in reply to

The Blackwall Tunnel always used to have a funny smell about it - some factory or something nearby (not as bad as the Greenwich Foot Tunnel though !). How was your run ? Manage over that 8k ?!

in reply to

Long runs are for wknds when I have more time really, so maybe I'll stretch beyond 8k next wknd, watch this space :) This evening I did 4.3k in 30mins, every now and then I listen to w9r3 of c25k again to see how far I can go in 30mins, still trying to get to 5k! Super impressed with your 24.5k of running Lucca. Also doing 8.7k in an hour. I'm quite a bit slower than you I think!

Well done Lizzy 39.3 kms is great. Unfortunately, I am definately a shopping trip short of my goal this week and only managed a miserly 25 km. If only I had spent the Saturday kicking the kms instead of eating/drinking, maybe I wouldn't have had such a bad hangover yesterday.

Sorry guys, I will feel so bad if we don't make it to see Santa, this weeks goal 'must try harder'.

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone in reply to 3rd-Time-Here

Don't feel bad! 25K is great! :)

in reply to 3rd-Time-Here

25kms is fantastic :) :)

How do you do an 'unexpected walk' Lizzy ?! Did your legs take off without telling you ? :-) Congratulations on the 39k though - well done !

I've managed 31km this week. That's 24.5k running and 6.5k walk. I wish I had more time to up the walking total. Perhaps that can be my aim for this week - I have a shopping trip planned on Wednesday, so perhaps I can do some km kicking mrsg style :-)

However, I'm proud of my running this week - that total included an 8.7k run - which was 1 whole hour of running - no stopping or walking !! Yippee (was asleep for most of the day afterwards though !)

in reply to

Now that would be a multi-tasking at its best. I could stay on the sofa in the warmth whilst my legs did the walking!!! What happened was had a tiff with my husband because he didn't want to go for a walk. Normally I wouldn't feel like walking and watch telly. But instead I thought of the North Pole Kickers and went for a walk. So glad I did it - felt much better for it.

:) :) :)

in reply to

That's the great ting about the km kicking target - if it just gets you out for a walk even just once more than you might have otherwise gone, then its worked :-)

moreless profile image
morelessAdministrator7 stone

OMG! I can't rid myself of this image of Lizzie's legs striding off out of the door, with Lizzy stranded on the couch! :)

I just don't know how anyone can run for a whole hour, well done you, that's amazing.

Of course you could have upped your walking by getting your lazy a**e out of bed the next day and taken the poor dog out! ;)

Any excuse to go shopping!

I was plunging my way through the icy water and snow trying to keep up with the sleigh saw a few seals slither past me, had to have breather after half a mile so to warm up did a bit of dancing on the slippery path. will have to speed up next time as the reindeers and sleigh had run off!

where do you put what you have done and does dancing count, what would one hour equate to?

Right here would be lovely. Going to be totting up everyone's kms in a little while. Dancing does count although no idea of paces/steps per hour.
