To be honest I am surprised that the Drs still prescribed tablets. In a lot of places you can be referred to a gym for 6 months free membership on the nhs. You have to want to do this as it takes will power and determination.
Look at the nhs 12 week plan and start counting calories. If you look at the nhs plan the are loads of links re exercise, nutrition, and other resources. Even recipes etc. There is a free app called myfitnesspal which helps you count calories and manage balancing your diet. It even has a barcode scanner. It is easy to use.
Stay here and get inspiration and encouragment from others sharing their weightloss journeys.
I hope you join in.
If your BMI is > 30, there is some good evidence for Orlistat but you're right to be thinking that exercise and diet are the real keys to success. How about just starting off with walking for 10-15 minutes, then if that goes OK, gradually build it up in both duration and speed to half an hour of fast walking. If fast walking goes OK, try jogging for a little bit. Jogging is free, you can do it anywhere, and you don't need any expensive equipment. The down side is that it might hurt your knees. The best low impact exercise in that case (in my opinion) would be swimming. Some more info about Orlistat here;

If anyone else is interested, your BMI needs to be >30 before it's available on prescription. There is a lower dose (and very expensive) over the counter version available called Alli. There used to be a few anti-obesity drugs available but the others have been withdrawn due to concerns with side effects. Orlistat is the only one I would recommend, and only for those with a BMI > 30. Personally I think the OTC version is overpriced and if your BMI is <30 you should be able to lose weight without it.
