Any Suggestions....

I'm over 20 st and find weight loss very difficult and slow. I've lost 15lbs since the beginning of the year and was hoping to up my exercise but due to a fall I've damaged my knee and waiting for surgery. Can anyone suggest any tips that might help with weight loss until I'm back on my feet?

I'm reducing my own weight substantially at the moment as I'm tired of feeling tired and I am desperate to get healthy again.

My problem is a lack of self control when it comes to food, I come from a family of comfort eaters and it's given me the same issue. Every time I'm depressed... time to eat.

For me it was easier to cut out solid food entirely and take it to the extreme. I'm juicing now. This is my 6th day so far with an eventual aim of between 30-60 days depending on how my health is further effected.

So far I've dropped one dress size and actually feel great. It's hard and it doesn't exactly make you a sociable person but it works. The aim is for me to cure my food addiction this way and face my problems head on.

Anticipated loss over the next 2 months if I continue for the full period is about five and a half stone which takes me to just center on target weight range for my height.

You don't have to cut out all solid food (I just had to). Instead you could replace breakfast and lunch with fresh veg and fruit juice and have a light meal in the evening containing 80% veg and 20% grains/beans/proteins or something like that.

It would dramatically reduce your weight and make it easier for you to get about, walk again after your surgery.

I would consult a doctor first though if you go the whole hog because it can be extreme.

Hi, I am a similar weight to you and I know what a big journey it is.

Recently I asked a question on here about exercise and it seems many people feel that exercise doesn't help much with weight loss anyway.

If you can't exercise at the moment I would suggest concentrating on cutting down and making small lifestyle changes in respect of food - you are clearly making progress on this anyway.

Once you have had your surgery you can start a bit of gradual walking and that may help you step up the weight loss a bit and by then, you should be a bit lighter making it easier on your joints.

Good luck!

With minimal exercise choices concentrate on what you eat more as that will still help you to lose weight. Try looking at upper body exercises to keep you active till you are back on your feet. Weights, shadow boxing, crunches etc, look on google so many different ideas for all fitness levels. Hope your knee heals up soon. Dont give up you can do this

I found weight loss very hard, but not difficult. The trick is just to eat slightly less than you need, or eat the same but with exercise. When I got a knee injury I just swapped gym machines to upper body one like hand bike, weights etc. But it does take time. A long time, just be patient and don't give up.

Hi...thank you all for suggestions, I'm now looking into alternative exercise and reducing my calories further. Just got to be patient and not let my emotions take over.

If you feel the urge to eat more than you should come on here and read a few posts - it helps me. It also helps when I give advice as it motivates me to stay on track, I'd feel like a fraud if I gave advice whilst stuffing my face;)

And remember - what seems to be becoming our motto on this forum - slow and steady wins the race!

There's only so far you can reduce calories! What you eat is as important as how much you eat. Cut out the 'white' foods, like sugar, white bread, breakfast cereals, and go for the whole grain, higher fibre foods, with a variety of vegetables, if you can. Watch out for hidden sugar in things like low fat foods.

If you can cook from scratch it's usually better for your health and weight loss. Good luck, hope your knee is better soon.
