I too have an underactive thyroid and take thyroxin. Are you hoping to control your thyroid activity by diet rather than medication?

I used the 12 week plan to kick start my change in eating habits so unless this is contraindicated by your condition then I recommend it.

Hi.I also have an underactive thyroid and am presently on 100 mcg Levo and still having blood tests, having started on 25 mcg. I started to diet last Friday but was aiming for 800 to 1000 Kcals, Thinking 1000 was right.I've lost 1 or2 lbs (scales are dodgy). Felt a bit ill today so am going to increase to 1000, then 1200 after a week if I lose weight and can manage the exercise regime which would have been impossible, now more doable if joints allow. Then poss 1400 as I have a low basal metabolism ie1600 approx to maintain weight.I'm taking vitamin D and iron.

Absolutely amazed that I've lost weight as diets never usually work. 1200 is the minimum for most women, its clearly changed from 1000 I think the Levo must be helping here. If you are young and active I'd start highon 1400 and then increase activity if you can if there is no weight loss. Or get thyroid levels checked.Wondering if the 1000 rule, although a balanced diet which taught me to cook, messed up my metabolism when younger (plump but very active teenager who slimmed down and then struggled with weight) I was still gaining weight easily until ill at uni. Then could eat normally and maintain a normal weight for years, no idea why For about 3 years pre diagnosis I gained about 2 stone initially over a year partly due to meds but has been stable for a while Now losing it, so the Levo must be helping

Hi Sammy3003,

As always, when people have underlying medical conditions, I strongly recommend discussing the issues over with your GP / medical advisor in terms of how your weight loss efforts might impinge upon your conditions and vice versa.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts.
