HiI had an ovarian cyst removed almost 20 years ago. It turned out not to be as big as they had thought but was causing bloating and pain. I also had some ovarian drilling done. I had a laparotomy as they didn't want to take the risk of it being cancerous and spreading via laparoscopy. I'm guessing you will be having a laparotomy too? It was very painful afterwards and they gave me quite strong painkillers which took the edge off it. I was on a morphine drip for a while immediately after the surgery though. If you know anyone who has had a c-section it is virtually the same cut. I wouldn't plan on doing anything for at least the first couple of weeks. After that it's a few more weeks before you will be on your feet properly. I think they gave me a 6 week sick note for work. I couldn't drive for a few weeks either as it was too painful when I pressed the clutch. Also it heals on the outside much quicker than inside so you will need to mind what you do for a few months. Once it was all healed up though the pain was gone. I worked with a lady who had the surgery for the endometriosis and she said the same, once it all healed up she felt tons better than she did before. Everyone is different though so some heal faster, some feel more/less pain from the operation. I can see it makes sense for all the procedures to be done in one surgery but be kind to yourself when recovering as your body will have a lot of work to do healing and you will need a lot of rest to help it do that. The better it mends the better you will feel afterwards so you will need to be patient with the process. Good luck!

Thanks so much for ur reply . They are hoping to do a laparoscopy but said it may need to be a laparotomy , depending on how it goes .thanks so much for the advice . It’s getting in that of my sleep and mobility so I’ll be glad of it being removed if it helps in the longer term .

Glad to have been of help. If you have a laparoscopy the external healing is faster - I had one of those done too! - and you will possibly be on the move again after a couple of weeks 😀 You will still be quite sore at first but not as much but the internal healing will still take a while. Just remember that and go carefully even though it looks mended from the outside. Also you will probably get a lot of trapped wind with either op, I forgot to mention that, and it's pretty uncomfortable! Sip peppermint tea or better still a few drops of peppermint oil (the kind that's fit for human consumption!) in some warm boiled water. I wish someone had told me that before the laparoscopy! All the best and I hope you will feel better afterwards

Hi,

I had a large cyst removed 2 years ago after 18 months of pain and weight gain and not being listened too! It came up just under my belly button! After a scan I was added to the emergency list as it was twisting my ovary. They hoped to do keyhole but after so long realised they needed to do open surgery so I ended up with 4 small incisions and a large c-section type cut. I was in surgery a longer than expected went down at 9am and woke up at 2.30 where he told me he saved the ovary. They drained the fluid and then removed the cyst. It was painful at first but nothing too bad, wasn’t as painful as when I had c-section. I was only on painkillers no morphine or anything. Recovery wasn’t as bad as I expected I was up and about pretty quickly just had to take it easy for a couple of weeks. I had 4 weeks off work and driving then back to normal but felt okay after 2 weeks. I was pain free and my stomach was half the size after. Unfortunately, mine came back just as big as the first one within 6 months time I was back in surgery but this time they managed keyhole but I lost an ovary and fallopian tube. It had also attached to my bowel. I recovered quickly and was back at work in 3 weeks. Im pain free now but suffer with random stabbing pains and just feel like ill always have issues until the day it’s all gone never feels fully normal if you like but defo pain and pressure free now.

Good luck with everything xx

hi, I had a 10cm cyst removed 15 years ago. They hoped to remove laparoscopic but I had to have a laparotomy due to the size. They were able to save the ovary and I have had no ongoing pain or issues. Due to the laparotomy I had to spend 3 days in hospital and then couldn’t drive for a month.

I have had other smaller cysts in the past 10years and all disappeared whilst I was having waitful watching by the gynaecologist.
