Hi all,

I’m new here and have recently been Diagnosed with PCOS from my doctors about a month ago, I am struggling to conceive and I have been told that I need to lose at least 15-20 kg before I can get any help from the doctors. Is there anything that anyone can recommend me to do, I am exercising and watching what I eat but I’m feeling tired all the time and the weight is really not dropping off the scales. I feel embarrassed and quite upset that I am not able to fall pregnant feel as though I have failed in my marriage with my partner. Please if anyone has any tips I would love to know and really could do with the help. Thank you all so much

You are doing fine, keep going and do not not be hard on yourself. They have rules - I have PCOS but was required to put on weight ca15kg to be treated. I switched from looking at my weight in stones to kg (whatever u r used to perhaps try switching to the other - guessing switch to stones in your case) and did not weigh too often, once a week or every couple of weeks probably - it takes time. I have then stayed stable at new weight for decades, but no obvious changes maintained in my lifestyle. Oh - was heavier during the 2 pregnancies- so their rules and help can work… I do find I loose weight when I give up chocolate bars, biscuits, crisps, Icecream, sweets, fizzy drinks and alcohol (I aim to loose anything unhealthy!) for lent. Instead I drink water and snack on hazel nuts or seeds (normal meals as well), hard at first but normally settles and I actually feel better when I loose the unhealthy stuff.

Be kind to yourself and give yourself time. Sounds like PCOS diagnosis is quite recent, such tends to be a bit of a shock to the system. Can you talk to your partner about how you feel - I hope you should receive love and unconditional support, but they can be worried and a bit confused as well. More difficult when you find out about any complication post marriage, but remember it was ‘you’ that was chosen and you are loved. If you can find anything to laugh at and enjoy, such comes highly recommended.

Wishing you all the best, good luck.

Sorry you are feeling like this, but it’s not your fault! PCOS is a medical condition. It means we can put on weight easily but it doesn’t mean you can’t lose weight! Slimming world really worked for me. I hadn’t tried to get pregnant before I lost weight with slimming world but I am pregnant now and the PCOS didn’t seem to affect me. My periods became more regular once I lost weight too which is only going to help you because it means you ovulate more regularly. How often do you have periods? I’d recommend starting to track your periods and possibly your ovulation and hopefully this will spur you on if you start to see improvements. Really recommend slimming world as an easy weight loss plan. Good luck!

Hey so my periods are sometimes regular sometimes they come after 6-8 weeks

Yes I think I need to start something like slimming world. If you don’t mind how long did you take to lose the weight and did you fall pregnant straight away ?

Any vitamins or anything you take to help with the pcos

Your words mean a lot thank you so much

I was taking metformin for a while, I booked a private appointment with a consultant endocrinologist who prescribed it for me. Seemed to also help in regulating my periods. It was quite expensive, I think about £150/£200 to see her but worth it for me. I know some people take inositol as a supplement instead of taking metformin, I never tried it though as the consultant says it’s similar but much more expensive than a prescription (but I guess you could save the money on seeing someone privately and go for inositol as it doesn’t need a prescription). I don’t know if the Gp would prescribe metformin.

Slimming world worked quite quickly for me when I stuck to it but I took an approach of still wanting to go out to eat and drink quite a lot so I think it took me about a year to lose 2 stone. I didn’t try and get pregnant straight away so can’t comment on that but my periods became more regular (no more 60+ day cycles).

Honestly I really appreciate it, thank you for sharing your experience with me it’s nice to connect with people that are going through the same or similar things to you as well. I will take a look into these steps and see how it goes. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel ❤️😘 and I hope you have an amazing pregnancy and an adorable baby soon sending you lots of love 💗

Hey, i know this is late, but the thing that helped me the most with my weight was more or less eating like I'm diabetic. Changing which fruits i eat, reducing milk (even if you're not lactose intolerant, lactose can cause minor swelling of the intestine, which changes how you absorb everything else) or switching to lacto-free where possible.. and of course, lowering carbs.

There's a lot of good information about the glycemic load of foods that can help. I've lost 15kg with less exercise than before (i used to to multiple work outs a day while waiting for the kettle to boil for my tea but I've yet to build a new habit)

Another thing that can help people with pcos is a supplement with inositol.

However, the focus of a low carb diet for me was to counterract the insulin resistance, which had begun causing damage for my liver. Lower insulin resistance also improves your general hormonal health but can't necessarily fix things like androgen production. If insulin resistance is part of your pcos - and if you struggle to lose weight despite a "decent" diet, it probably is - tackling that first can really help.

The reason i am writing all this is because there are things in slimming world and other diet programs that are not good if you have insulin resistance - they allow for higher portions of fruit and carbs than is ideal for someone with insulin resistance. While such programs can help by providing group support and accountability, it's always necessary to keep in mind the physical difference between how you process carbs and sugars compared to the average person.

Of course, neither carbs nor sugars are evil and they are still important parts of your diet, it is just important to balance them properly.

Hi - did you take inositol? If yes I would love to have feedback about it (I did a post!). I've been checking the low carb diet but I love bread rice and pasta and I'm really struggling with even starting it. Any tips/ references that can make it easier? Tks!

Hi strawberrylove, hope you ok. What may be of help is understanding nutrients and how it impacts your body specially in in case of PCOS. We tend to need more than the daily requirement. Metformin did not work for me as it keeps inducing depression ( its actually replacing inositol B8) to regulate your insulin, better take B8. Try changing your diet to organic food ( please avoid GMO and hormone induce meat - high estrogen level in the meat will definitely destabilize your hormones). If you get access to ' supplemena' from Germany " pregnalux", it works wonders. Unfortunately for me, it's no longer delivering to Seychelles. I was 97kg, depressed, hitting 30 ( and let's not forget how the pressure to have a child before 30) and hating myself... Everything about me, how I looked, feel and the perception of how people see me.... Please take your time to heal... It's not a competition, even if people around you may make you feel like it...Now am 80kg, still work in progress, but on the way... Do take care of yourself. You are beautiful in every way not broken.... You are healing, no matter what paste you are....remember that ❤️

Awhh honestly this has really made me motivated thank you so much. So I have started taking inositol recently it’s been about a week I’ve noticed I don’t feel so hungry. But I just hope I am able to lose the weight before my next appointment which is in March it seems a long way away but I know it will be here before I know it. My husband has really motivated me as wel and doesn’t judge me but I feel like I have failed him and our marriage although I think 4 years of being married is a long time it really isn’t and I have a long way to go to worry about not having children yet. I know there are other options but I pray that I don’t have to go through that and am blessed naturally.

What inositol are you taking and how has this been for you? Please give feedback on my post if you can. I also felt less hungry when I was taking D-chiro-inositol before, but new science says that one is not great by itself so I'm currently looking for alternatives!
