Help with initial diagnosis of PCOS

Hello!

I have just been told this morning that I have PCOS so I would love to have some initial thoughts on what I can do to help tackle the symptoms.

The main things I am struggling with include:

- Weight loss no matter how much I exercise/ control my diet

- Thinning hair

- Spots round my face

I have been advised by my GP to go on the combined pill but if anyone has any tips aside from this I'd love to hear them!

Many thanks,

Freya 🙂

Hi Freya

I would have a look at youtube etc and look how changing your diet can help first. Particularly intermittent fasting. It doesn't have to be extreme 16:8 is quite common. This helps with managing blood sugar levels.

Some people have also reported success with a supplement called Inositol.

Exercise can also be an issue. Cardio is not particularly effective for PCOS. Look at using weights as muscle helps with insulin resistance. You do not have to become a bodybuilder.

Other supplements such as vitamin D can help to lower testosterone.

Most importantly do your own research to establish what you feel comfortable with.

The pill can help with regulating periods, but if at some point in the future you want to start a family this obviously is a hurdle.

Anaemia is a common issue if you sometimes have particularly heavy periods.

Good luck.

When I first got diagnosed, a friend of mine gave me the book "PCOS for Dummies". It literally changed my life! It helped me to understand PCOS without all the scientific jargon. It's got amazing tips for all the symptoms of PCOS. And it's got truly yummy recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I use it almost every day. I do hope helps you too on this journey of living with PCOS.
