Newly diagnosed

Hello everyone,

I have been diagnosed with PCOS just before lockdown by an internal ultrasound scan. I’ve been on the pill since I was fourteen and mini-pill since my early twenties (I am now 28) and came off it in August last year as we wanted to try for a baby.

I had no periods until November when I reverted back to the bleeding I had in my early teens: horrendous pain, excessive bleeding, large clots and this period lasted for four months. I’m a teacher and I had to take time off work due to the pain. After four months of heavy bleeding, to cut a long story short I was prescribed Provera and shortly after went back on the mini-pill.

I’ve tried my best during lockdown to keep myself fit and healthy and have trialled a new diet this week keeping to unprocessed food and lots of fruit and vegetables. I’ve been doing yoga and felt so much better until today. I’ve got stomach cramps, spotting, a hormonal headache, aching joints, what feel like hot flushes and generally feel complete and utter rubbish.

Is there any advice anyone can give me to help manage these symptoms in the meantime before I get a referral through? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Many thanks!

Hi! I was diagnosed 5 years ago with very similar symptoms to you so I 100% sympathise. Unfortunately it is just a case of trying to keep as healthy as possible and then doing other symptom control (e.g. over the counter pain relief). If you’ve started a new diet though it could be your body adjusting? Particularly if you’ve suddenly drastically reduced your sugar/caffeine intake, which can make it feel like you have the flu.

In the meantime keep going, it sounds like you’re already doing what the gp will suggest (ie sticking to a healthy diet and exercise regime). Hope you feel better soon. :)
