Confuse about PCOS

I was told I have polycystic ovaries, last year, after a miscarriage in 2016, it didn't show on blood test, but on internal scan it shows, My period has been very regular until the last 7 months. I was prescribed metformin, but due other health complication I was advise to stop by my GP as it was interfering with another health issue and was due to have major surgery, so I STOP taking the metformin, I was told to start again after my surgery, 3 months after my surgery, had a hormone blood test everything seems fine, even check my insulin resistant but it was all ok. But my GP asking me to wait again. I don't know why, as I still don't get period, my period only came after I having a smear test. My weight keep going up even though I eat sensibly and go to the gym. I just don't know what to do. I never heard of PCOS before, as I had my son 14 years ago. Just need clarity.

Blood tests can be hit and miss sometimes so it isnt uncommon for them to come back normal and the cysts are only a symptom and not the cause and come and go. Some ladies have no issues conceiving and because you were younger you are more fertile too.

I would go back to your GP about metformin if it previously helped you. In the UK this is primarily a diabetes drug so is not licenced for use for pcos so you should be insulin resistant tested prior to being put on it. To test IR you need a glucose tolerance test so blood test, sugary drink and blood test as this shows how your body copes with sugar - this test is often not done and it is the one blood test which does not show how your body deals with sugar!!

They never offered my daughter a sugar test. She is 23 yr old and was just diagnosed with PCOS. She went on a strict diet like the doctor told her. She would get very sick from not eating carbs. I was scared she would go into a coma or die from not having carbs. She now eats some healthy carbs. I wish there was an answer for her. She struggles so badly with her weight despite how sensible she eats and a regular exercise plan.

I dont eat carbs except in vegetables - if we ate the RDA we would still put on 2lb a month so over a stone a year so it is a struggle. I am on the combined pill and it does make losing weight a little easier.
