MMR vaccine: Grandaughter had MMR live vaccine... - Vasculitis UK
MMR vaccine
This document from the US department of health about immunocompromised patients and their contacts clarifies who can be given which vaccines. Some vaccines should not be given to close contacts of such patients (if your granddaughter was to be given a polio vaccine she shouldn't have been given the oral version for example).
cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrht...
In the first section, severely immunocompromised patients, it says:
"Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is not contraindicated for the close contacts (including health-care providers) of immunocompromised persons"
If you are exposed to someone with measles you may be given an injection of immunoglobulin to protect you - but contact with someone with measles isn't the same as a child who has just had her jab.
As I understand this document you are OK - but if you are worried you could call your doctor (I know, it's the weekend!). Other than that, it depends on whether you are classed as SEVERELY immunocompromised and how far away you live from your granddaughter I suppose. If you are really worried miss out this weekend and ask your doctor on Monday - if you only see her once a month it ceases to be a problem doesn't it? If you must see her this weekend call 111 and ask for the opinion of one of their medics - make that clear when you call or they'll be sending you an ambulance because you have measles!
Dear scot1,
I don't think you have anything to worry about here, quite frankly,- after all it's not you that's having the vaccine. I wouldn't worry myself however, as PMRpro said above, if you are worried do seek medical advice.
I hope you have a great time with your granddaughter.
Best wishes AndrewT
For the first 2 weeks, someone vaccinated is a carrier.
