I was thinking over my history for when i see the Endo (whenever that will be) and I had a thought. I had a mirena fitted for extremely heavy periods ( hypo symptom) and after seeing a consultant they said i had to try the mirena before a hysterectomy was considered as I have had 3 caesareans. After a horrendous 3 months continuous periods they stopped completely. I have put on 5 stone since that was fitted in June 2011. Anyone else had problems or know of a link?
Has anyone else linked the Mirena coil with a w... - Thyroid UK
Has anyone else linked the Mirena coil with a worsening of hypothyroid symptoms and weight gain.
Hi I wouldn't recommend the mirena coil to anyone who is hypo as you get double the symptoms, my gp tried to tell me it was related for 4 years of having it in was ok but coming up to the fifth year I felt crap pains in my hip, really bad bloating and yes the weight its out now feeling loads better.
Are you taking levothyroxine? Do you have a print-out of your latest thyroid gland blood test results - if so post them complete with the ranges and someone will comment upon them.
Female problems are a symptom of hypo (as well as other problems which GP's think aren't connected).

Hi, yes I am taking 125mcg Levothyroxine and posted my latest results here recently. I was wondering if the coil was making the hypo and weight issues worse. TSH 3.84 (0.35-5.5) FT4 13.6 (10.3-22.7) VIT D 60 (borderline deficient) b12 324 (211-911)
Thanks
Sue
Your TSH is still too high and should aim for 1 or under or even suppressed. Your Vit D is low and maybe supplement with D3 if your GP won't prescribe.
Your B12 too should be towards the upper level and if you supplement it should be methylcobalamin B12, either tablets or sublingual. These two vitamins are essential.
You are most probably undertreated with a TSH of 3.84 and meds should be increased.
I have started taking d3 and methyl b12 and have had increase to 150 Levo this week and waiting for choose n book letter re endo as lab wouldn't test t3. Wondering if I should consider coil removal. Also considering getting private t3 n antibody test now before I see endo.
I remember you asking about the vitamins before. and it is good you are now taking the supplements. I cannot tell you what to do re the coil but I would suggest you wait until you see what the Endo says. He may do the T3 and antibdy test for you. He may be good.
I will say that menstural problems are a symptoms of hypothyroidism and this is a link
I just wanted to add that I have no problems with the Mirena coil, and consider it to have saved me a lot of pain. I have endometriosis as well as my hypothyroidism, and the Mirena has really made a huge difference to me.
I've heard some very negative stories too, but wanted to add my positive one. As with all these things, it will suit some people and not others!
Emma
Hi just to add i had no problem with the mirena either and it solved the problem of heavy periods, I expect we all react differently to things x
Hi yes I think it must work for some and not others but like I said had it in for 4 years and no problem I was hypo at the time they only last for 5 years perhaps it was running out or just mite have been going through the change.
I was told not to have a coil fitted after I had my caesarean section for fear of perforating the womb, but assume this hasn't happened with you. Wish you well. Janet.
I suffer with dry eyes and found that the mirena coil made this much worse. This was well before I was diagnosed with hypo though. xx
I had the mirena fitted, started with various sympotoms and went to the GP. That the was the beginning of me being diagnosed Hypothyroid. The doctor recognised the symptoms and new I had a family history. The fitst test was just in range so I had the coil removed. 3 months later I was out of range and put on thyroxine. I had never really thought about the coil making things worse but it was the beginning of me feeling rough.
I started to get dry eyes on Femodene (I think it was called Femodene, it was such a long time ago). Anyway, I put this down to the reduction in oestrogen it obviously caused. (Contraceptive pills, I'm sure you know, deliberately put your hormones out of kilter, so you can't get pregnant). I still have dry eyes, but I now put this down to entering the change and have been like this for a number of years now. I was also on teh Mirena coil for five years, (had it removed about 10 years ago) which I now believe depressed me, because of the progesterone in it.
