Don't Really Understand What I'm Looking At......

Hi

Wonder if anybody can help me make sense of these results?

Bit of background first...I have Hashimotos and have been on up to 75mcg T4 for years. I have recently found Dr P and am now about to start T3 as I may have a conversion problem. I don't seem to get on too well with T4 as I have had really bad pain in my knees and feet for ages, huge weight gains, a muzzy head etc etc.

Anyway, results are as follows:

TSH 0.71 (0.27-4.2)

T4 15.8 (12-22)

T3 3.6 (3.1-6.8)

B12 1152 (180-960) must stop supplementing that!

Folate 10.7 (4.4-20)

Ferritin 84 (29-470)

I have no idea if this is good or bad in terms of results, so any advice would be gratefully received.

I am a bit worried that I have been called back for another white blood count as I had a result of 2.7 (4-11). Should I be concerned ?

Thanks so much

Sharon

Don't worry about your B12. If you are supplementing with a good dose, your result will look high.

Your blood tests support the theory that you are not converting very well, but I feel your T4 is also on the low side so maybe you have a low TSH anyway and could do with a higher dose. But T3 will probably work better for you so I would go with that :)

Your white blood cell count could have been low because you had just had a bad infection or you were just coming down with something. This is probably why you have been called back for another one. If the next one is still low they will likely look at problems that could be suppressing your immune system, such as autoimmune diseases.

I'm sorry I can't be more help.

No that is very reassuring, thanks Carolyn. I was on the end of a fairly vicious cold when my bloods were taken and have had low white blood counts in the past too.. No one seemed concerned before , so I guess I shouldn't be now.

Good to know that you agree with T3 supplementation. Now all I have to do is convince my doctor that this is a good move ! She is, of course, adamant that all is in range an I need do nothing more. I'm going to use T3 that I have sourced myself , but would have liked to be monitored by my doc. Can' t see that happening unfortunately.

I had hoped that my tests would have given her an indication that I should trial T3. Have to start preparing my speech, then !

Apparently if you are taking B complex it masks active B12 so blood results will be off the wall. Same thing happened to me. Come off the complex for 4 weeks then have another B12 test - see what the difference is. Got that info from someone on this site.

A white cell count of 2.7 is quite low. That will probably be because your lymphocytes and neutrophils are low. So you could be more susceptible to infections. Look up leukopenia and neutropenia.

I have checked with Perncicious Aneamia site and they say come of oral supplementation of B12 for 2 months (body stores B12 for a long time) anyone injecting B12 has to come off for 4 months to get a correct result.

Another issue is serum B12 is of no use, you need Active B12 test

Thank you all - that's really interesting. The doctor scheduled me in for another test in two weeks. Sounds like that might not be much use as it is too early...
