Has anyone tried L-theanine and what was your experience

I know I have to get my T4 and T3 to optimal levels as well as my ferritin, folate, B12 and Vit D but suffer so much with depression and anxiety since starting Levothyroxine. I walk and have started swimming to try and improve my mood but so far nothing helps. L-theanine is an amino acid and is supposed to improve mood and promote relaxation.

Would love to hear if anyone has tried it and whether it did infact improve mood and relaxation.

Many thanks.

This is only my experience, so I don't know how it will match for you, but I find an immediate drop in my anxiety when I have one. it's not a long effect for me, but it's enough to help me start a task if I'm too anxious to begin with. However, getting my levothyroxine level better has a bigger effect on my overall anxiety.

I hope you find a solution and feel better soon!

Thank you Jr499

That sounds very hopeful, I think I’ll try it to see if it helps. Yes, hoping once my Levo dose is right I’ll start to improve.

I use it for sleep. I take half a tablet. It can dreams more vivid so start on a low dose, maybe a quarter. Not sure if it helps with anxiety.

Is your b12 OK- low b12 is a comorbidity of hypothyroidism and a common symptom is anxiety. ideally the level should be >500.

I love this forum and have learned so much but I worry about the B12 information. You are absolutely right about the symptoms but getting B12 into the blood is only part of the process. You have to be able to get it from blood to cells and then use it in the cells. Using an oral/sublingual/spray/patch can raise serum level and can help some people with symptoms, but there is no guarantee that it is correcting an underlying problem unless all symptoms resolve. Just be aware that getting serum B12 > 500 will not be enough reliably for everyone and that having raised it your chances of getting any medical help with B12 have taken a plummet downwards. And honestly, I know that some have no option but to do it themselves, because I did it myself, but I didn't know then that 'good' serum levels *could* still mean there was a problem - mine was >2000 from supplementation and I still got a huge improvement with injections. You *might* be ok, but don't assume you definitely are and that you have fixed this particular issue - it is far more complex than that for some people. Cheers

I wholly agree. I was really meaning serum levels should be >500 naturally ie before any form of treatment. I should have been clearer. I agree that if treatment is needed then the objective is symptom relief and absolutely not any specific serum level. My experience is similar to yours.

Thank you for your feedback

Magnesium can be very helpful for anxiety and sleep, if you haven't tried it already. I use the Better You oil spray on forearms, before bed.

Oh no, that sounds really awful for you. I already take anti anxiety meds but still get the anxiety. I was hoping it would improve mood too. Glad it is calming for you. I’m going to try it.

as far as i can gather there are no contraindications with thyroid conditions or medications

so what's to loose . its worth a try .

Previous post showing you are on inadequate dose and very low vitamin levels…..now working on improving

Low ferritin, can take a long time to improve

Gentle iron may be inadequate. See what results are at next test

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Did you get coeliac blood test done

Going strictly gluten free may reduce anxiety and may help improve absorption of levo

Thank you SlowDragon

Do you think I should get the Three Arrows rather than taking the gentle iron?

Yes, been tested for coeliac and was negative. Have tried gluten free and didn’t make any difference.

I’m just desperate to improve my mood and anxiety whilst increasing Levo to correct dose. I know I have to be patient.

See how much ferritin improves at next test

As I’ve only been supplementing for two weeks, how long do you suggest I leave it until re-testing all vitamins. Thank you

L-Theanine is excellent for that as well as sleep. (I took it at night with Schisandra, an adaptogen,) but recently an expert said she took theanine four times a day to promote relaxation and resistance to stress. I never took it that often but am considering it. I would start slowly.

That sounds helpful as I struggle with sleep and also not being able to deal with stress. Has it lifted your mood at all which is what I was hoping for. Thank you for the advice to start slowly.

Then you probably can use one or both and there are other adaptogens. I'm a cheerful type but when I was getting a little dark mood it was raising my FT3 that made the difference. I know doctors don't like to evaluate T3 but it is the active part of thyroid hormone and your brain needs good amount. I've been around here for over a decade and was often mortified how they ignored the entire TFTs. Not everyone agrees but I feel that reverse T3 is also a problem Too much sugar can effect some patients in that way as well.

You could look at reviews for L Theanine products on a website like iHerb.com or wherever you shop. They aren't totally reliable I suppose but may give you an idea from people who are using it. Best Wishes!

Thank you for recommending iHerb to look at reviews, that’s a great idea. Yes, I’m hoping that as my T3 raises I will feel a lot better. Many thanks for your help.
