Lobectomy

after discovering a nodule I had a thyroid lobectomy in September 2024. Biopsy came back as benign luckily. Since the surgery I have had what feels like a lump on the inside of my throat which is uncomfortable when swallowing. My wound on outside is healing well. I am not sure if this is just scar tissue. Anybody else experienced this ?

hi sorry you haven’t had a reply yet, hopefully this will bounce your message up to the top. I’ll tag PurpleNails who will know the answer.

Did you ask/ring/email your department at the hospital about it? Details will be on your appointment letter.

Hi. I had follow up appt which was all good but I didn’t realise the internal swelling would be still there 5 months on

Your remaining thyroid must be working harder to compensate for the lost part so is possibly swelling.

You’d expect to see low FT3 & FT4 if it’s struggling. Drs often only test TSH & assume if in range so must thyroid levels but the TSH can be unreliable, or high within range. So high enough to cause symtoms but not high enough for doctors to think it’s at a level which needs treatment.

I think if it’s causing a swallowing issue you need to have a referral to ENT & they may do an ultrasound or use a camera to see what’s happening.

Have you had thyroid antibodies tested previously?

Presumably you have had thyroid levels tested via GP ?

You need to get FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done

See if levels are good

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Also both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once for autoimmune thyroid disease

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

What vitamin supplements are you taking

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

Testing options and includes money off codes for private testing

Medichecks Thyroid plus BOTH TPO and TG antibodies and vitamins

Medichecks and BH also offer private blood draw at clinic near you, or private nurse to your own home…..for an extra fee

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.
