Doctor recommendations for prescribing Tirosint and/or t3 medication

kevultralight profile image

Hello! I am moving to the UK and am currently finding the optimal dose for hypothyroid using Tirosint (t4) and Cytomel (t3).

If available: Please message me, or post below any endocrinologist recommendations who would help prescribe these medications in the London Area?

Thank you so much!

Welcome to the forum kevultralight

You can name a doctor when asking for feedback on the forum, but replies need to be via private message.

A list of thyroid -friendly endos (NHS and private) can be requested by contacting TUK:

thyroiduk.org/contact-us/ge...

With any recommendation that you get, it is advisable to complete further research yourself before making a decision.

It is a good idea to have thyroid blood tests (TSH, FT4 and FT3) alongside key vitamins (ferritin, folate, B12 and vit D) prior to your appointment. This allows you to discuss the results with the endo at the first meeting.

I advise you complete your profile &/or start a new post with your most recent blood test results, so members can offer advice/ support.

It might not be absolutely impossible, but Tirosint and Cytomel are not regularly available in the UK.

There was ONE single NHS prescription for Tirosint in England in July 2024.

Note sure if you will be able to access this link:

openprescribing.net/analyse...

And zero NHS prescriptions for Cytomel.

They probably can be obtained but likely to be very expensive. Quite possible well over £200 for 28 tablets.

Because they are so rarely prescribed, identifying any doctors who would prescribe might be very difficult.

Are you not able to continue getting supplied by your existing prescriber?

I'll have to close this post as you are asking for endo names. Feel free to post another question on anything else!

helvella's medicines documents (UK and Rest of the World) can be found here:

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines

helvella has created, and tries to maintain, documents containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world. There is now a specific world desiccated thyroid document.

I highly recommend viewing on a computer screen, or a decent sized tablet, rather than a phone. Even I find it less than satisfactory trying to view them on my phone.

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines - UK

The UK document contains up-to-date versions of the Summary Matrixes for levothyroxine tablets, oral solutions and also liothyronine available in the UK. Includes injectables and descriptions of tablet markings which allow identification. Latest updates include all declared ingredients for all UK products and links to Patient Information Leaflets, Dictionary of Medicines and Devices (dm+d), etc. PLUS how to write prescriptions in Appendix F.

Also includes links for anti-thyroid medicines (but not product details).

Contains details of all known desiccated thyroid products including information about several products not considered to be Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT/Desiccated Thyroid Extract/DTE).

helvella - World Liothyronine

Contains a list of liothyronine products from around the world including brief details.

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines - RotW

Contains details of all levothyroxine and combination products - excluding desiccated thyroid products. Details available vary by country and manufacturer.

The link below takes you to a blog page which has direct links to the documents from Dropbox and QR codes to make it easy to access from phones. You will have to scroll down or up to find the link to the document you want.

This is my standard note when members post asking for comments on, or recommendations for, doctors. Some parts will not apply to this specific post.

If you have not already done so, adding some information to your profile might help and encourage replies. Members are very much more likely to make recommendations if they are convinced you understand what you are asking for, and will use it sensibly.

When someone asks for information about a specific doctor, or practice, or for suggestions of a good practitioner, that post will be closed to replies to ensure that our guidelines are not broken. The poster has not done anything wrong by asking!

It is fine to mention the name(s) of a doctor, or group of doctors, in a question - in neutral language.

For this reason, it is best to ask for information in a new and separate post so that turning off replying doesn’t terminate other discussions.

If you wish to help the person, send them a Private Message (also called Chat) with your information. (The poster might already have asked for Private Messages.)

This also applies if you want to name doctors or practices even when not specifically asked.

And it applies across all health professionals - including alternative practitioners, and all other forms of therapist.

Simply put, do NOT name doctors or other practitioners on the forum.

This is somewhat different to mentioning the name of a doctor due to their public role, their website, etc.

We hope that you get some helpful responses but, if you do not, feel free to post again.

Guideline 30 applies:

30. Do not post information about specific endocrinologists or doctors on the main board without their permission as this may result in unwanted attention from certain areas of the medical profession. If you wish to discuss a particular endocrinologist or doctor, you may mention his/her name and location, providing that you ask for comments by private message only.
