Help finding a doctor please

hi everyone

i have been taking levo for about 12 years now.

Basically i had post partum thyroiditis that didn’t resolve and wasn’t diagnosed. When i went hypo I had all ‘the tired all the time’ tests which said i was fine. Had late miscarriage and early miscarriage. Eventually when my son was 3 years old i saw a private miscarriage specialist who did loads of blood tests and found my tsh was fine but i was low in range. Put me on levo. Symptoms i didn’t realise i had (eg bone chill) went away.

I found a doctor to keep prescribing. He has now retired. I have done all the usual testing with him over the last decade to check i am always in range and my results are consistently tsh between 1 and 2; T4 and T3 bottom half of range (sometimes slightly below mid range, sometimes bottom quartile). I have never had antibodies at a conerning level, even unmedicated. Ferritin always low, never been anaemic and have been trying to get ferritin up all this time. Recently I have swapped to a heme iron supplement and my gp will check blood in 3 months.

Saw a doc on the health insurance who has said he will only prescribe if i have a result showing t4 out of range.

I am doing an intensive course to retrain and will then not be in a secure job for quite some time, so trialling coming off levo is really not feasible for me at the moment and i don’t know if my levels would be bad enough to get the prescription anyway.

I like the idea that my thyroid will adjust but i don’t believe it! I suspect I am one of the people whose levels never go back to normal because i was still suffering after 3 years and if it resolves it happens in 18m-2years. So this trial will be months of ill health and not being able to work, think, engage with other people in a normal way etc.

so i have had to resort to internet levo. I don’t like buying it online.

Anyone able to recommend a doctor VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE PLEASE (in line with group rules, don’t post names of doctors publicly). I need someone who would prescribe based on my history to avoid trying to prove i need levo by not taking it. I have the Thyroid UK list but don’t know who I should see who will treat me rather than taking my money, having me in tears reliving the miscarriages, and then sending me away with nothing.

I hope this is compliant with group rules, apologies if not.

Thanks for reading!

It is FINE to ask. But from experience, people inevitably reply on forum. Hence I'll add my usual text and close the post.

This is my standard note when members post asking for comments on, or recommendations for, doctors. Some parts will not apply to this specific post.

If you have not already done so, adding some information to your profile might help and encourage replies. Members are very much more likely to make recommendations if they are convinced you understand what you are asking for, and will use it sensibly.

When someone asks for information about a specific doctor, or practice, or for suggestions of a good practitioner, that post will be closed to replies to ensure that our guidelines are not broken. The poster has not done anything wrong by asking!

It is fine to mention the name(s) of a doctor, or group of doctors, in a question - in neutral language.

For this reason, it is best to ask for information in a new and separate post so that turning off replying doesn’t terminate other discussions.

If you wish to help the person, send them a Private Message (also called Chat) with your information. (The poster might already have asked for Private Messages.)

This also applies if you want to name doctors or practices even when not specifically asked.

And it applies across all health professionals - including alternative practitioners, and all other forms of therapist.

Simply put, do NOT name doctors or other practitioners on the forum.

This is somewhat different to mentioning the name of a doctor due to their public role, their website, etc.

We hope that you get some helpful responses but, if you do not, feel free to post again.

Guideline 30 applies:

30. Do not post information about specific endocrinologists or doctors on the main board without their permission as this may result in unwanted attention from certain areas of the medical profession. If you wish to discuss a particular endocrinologist or doctor, you may mention his/her name and location, providing that you ask for comments by private message only.
