Started taking magnesium supplement from the supermarket and slept really well and felt more relaxed and less joint pain. Have only been taking half a tablet every night for about three nights, with the intention of building up to a full tablet slowly. Today my bladder seems to be irritated, running to the toilet every hour or so. It’s not cystitis or a uti, doesn’t hurt to go but just feel like it’s a bit overactive (had something similar before being diagnosed hypo and it went away on its own, but can’t remember what caused it then. The only thing that has changed is the addition of magnesium. Anyone else had this issue with magnesium? I’m stopping it for a couple of days to see how it goes. Typical…because I’ve already ordered some magnesium glycinate. The supermarket one says magnesium oxide and magnesium stearate.

Haven’t you changed your Levothyroxine dose recently? It’s more likely to be as a result of adjusting to new dose if so.
Hi HSD, I’ve been on the increased dose of 87.5 mcg for seven weeks so thinks are still probably levelling out, hopefully it will settle soon. If it’s not one thing playing up it’s another!
Magnesium oxide is not an ideal form to take for magnesium.
The ligand of choice for large-scale manufacturers of multivitamins and minerals containing magnesium is the magnesium oxide due to its compactness, high magnesium content by weight, low cost, and ease-of-use in manufacturing. However it is insoluble in water. Insoluble magnesium salts such as magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia) depend on stomach acid for neutralization before they can be absorbed, and thus are relatively poor oral magnesium sources, on average.

Magnesium oxide is also used as an osmotic laxative. The British National Formulary lists the similar Magnesium hydroxide.

This could be why it is affecting you.
Magnesium glycinate is very different. However, I know much less about magnesium than many others here.
Oh! Thank you, Helvella! The bladder irritation has settled, but my stomach has been cramping like mad today! I’m not taking any more, but I will try the magnesium glycinate when it arrives. Actually I think it might be bisglycinate…or something like that. Maybe I will be ok with that one. Hope so because before all this it did help with sleep and muscle pain. Thanks for the info.
I’ve been taking magnesium bisglycinate for some time now and haven’t noticed anything.
