Head Sweating

Wondering if anyone else with under active thyroid and taking Levothyroxine suffers from head sweating and general overheating? Take Milk Thistle, Vit D, magnesium and a fish oil tablet every day. Endo adjusted dose age but hasn’t helped. Thanks!

Hi Devon09

I've read that there is a link between head sweating and vitamin D deficiency, maybe something to look into further?

I will do, thank you.

Hi I'm 65 and still having terrible hot sweats pouring out my face its horrible

in reply tokaz111

Yes, I'm 68 and it's driving me crazy!

I am 66 and had worse and worse hot flashes and have now found it is from CLL, a type of leukemia, a common symptom of that disease. 65 is old for hormone related hot flashes.

Adjusted your dose how? Up or down? Did he do any labs first? Sounds rather haphazard to me.

So, how much levo are you taking? When were you last tested?

Why are you taking Milk Thistle? There's a possibility that it could be affecting the absorption of your thyroid hormone.

Do you take your vit D and magnesium at least six hours away from your levo?

Sorry about all the questions, but we really need more details to be able to make any helpful comments. :)

I saw the Endocrinoligist last in May of this year. He conducted several blood tests over a period of time with the result that he very slightly dropped the dosage of Levothyroxine, i.e. 100mcg every day, and 125mcg three times a week M,W,F. I take the Levo at night and have done so for over 20 years. In the morning I take the vitamins. Why do I take Milk Thistle? With the belief that it is good for the liver. Hope that helps.

OK, so what were the results of your tests? Did he say why he was reducing it slightly?

I think you ought to do more research into Milk Thistle. Do you have problems with your liver?

in reply togreygoose

No liver problems. Off the top of my head I cannot tell you the blood test results but...for a while I felt much better. Am checking with GP for Fit D blood test this week. Thank you for your advice. Very much appreciated.

So, if you don't have liver problems, it might be a good idea to stop the Milk Thistle.

Hi yes my whole body sweats but worse on head. It's horrible sometimes when your out and people see you sweating. I find it all year round but in the summer it's bad.

in reply toWaynelisa67

Absolutely! Everyone around me is freezing and I'm walking around in a t-shirt!

And still too hot.

I've suffered with this for years. I discovered my vitamin D level is very low so have been supplementing now for 3 months and the head sweating has reduced dramatically.

in reply tomarlathome

Thank you. I might have to adjust the Vitamin D...thought I was taking a high dose but maybe not.

What dosage are you taking?

I've suffered with this for years (all over, but scalp is worst). I think it kicked in shortly after I was diagnosed with thyroiditis. Certainly, I first reported it to the GP shortly after. I've recently switched to taking just NDT, after taking levothyroxine for years, and a period when I was taking levo+NDT. I'm hoping that NDT alone might help, but it's a long shot.

I also have a vitamin D level that is in range, but towards the bottom of the range. I am supplementing to see if that helps, but early days on that one.

I have also been taking amitriptyline for migraines. Amitriptyline can cause sweating, and I certainly think it makes mine worse. It also seems to be messing with my liver (just waiting for final blood test confirmation - I weaned myself off it, had 2 blood tests done, the second of which showed liver (GGT) getting better, then went back onto amitriptyline, so now expecting latest blood test to show GGT getting worse again). Once I've got the results of my latest test, I'll probably replace amitriptyline with something else.

Unfortunately, sweating is a tricky one to get to the root cause. When the sweating is localised, there are ways to address it. Iontophoresis (passing small electric currents through the area) works for me, but it's no use for the scalp. Botox would probably work for the scalp, but I don't like the idea. Beta blockers can work apparently, but I don't like that idea either. You might have different views on those, so might be worth investigating.

What is NDT?

Natural dessiccated thyroid, normally made from pig thyroid

I forgot to mention, I’ve also given up caffeine as that can also make sweating worse

Thank you. I'm quite fascinated by the fact that so many women seem to be suffering from the same problem. As bad as it is, I can only say, Thank God we are not alone. Menopause is long behind me and I thought all embarrassing symptoms would be gone.
