hi

I too have low levels of vitamin d.

I take supplements when I remember but need to do more research about

- issues with absorbency - I have metabolic syndrome so all sorts of issues including probably gut issues. If there are absorption issues, supplements might be a waste of time. Better try to fix gut microbiome first.

- I heard that as we age, absorption from the sun works less

- vit d is also a hormone so it’s good to get proper guidance in how one supplements

- I have heard functional doctors say that the recommended daily doses of supplementation are way below what the body needs

Those are my main thoughts. I need to find out and understand more

Consider doing the loading dose as it’s recommended.

Don’t forget 100 of Vit K (mk-7 is longer lasting so a good option), and magnesium is also a D co factor.

I did the calculator and overshot my goal by a bit, but it totally worked to get my levels up in the timeframe the calculator said.

Now I’m back to a more routine maintenance dose about half what I did during the calculated period.

If relying on the sun it is suggested you need at least 20 mins between 11 and 3pm with almost half of your body exposed....

I moved to Crete in 2004 and a few years later tested insufficient - as did hubby. We both have Hashi's and supplement.

I once posted here, some research done in Crete about VitD - will try and find it ....

According to Grassroots Health your result would be good around 60 so your dose would be around 4000 iu's. ( a 1000 iu's for every 10 units below 60 ) Vit D is fat soluble so should be taken with a fat containing meal. There is a VitD gel capsule containing olive oil - Natures Best....on-line. NB for readers. Ng/L is a measurement not used so often in UK - mostly pmol/L. Divide pmol result by 2.5 for ng/L....

Not sure this is the one ! Interesting though !

I remember helvella once quoting the paper.

Look at grassroots health and don't forget vit K2 and Magnesium (K2 at different time of day as both fat soluble)You can get an oral spray from Healthspan elite

I personally think that you perhaps need to deliver some to the gut microbiome direct, so I take caps and the spray.

NHS guidelines at 400 iu are based, afaiu, on A paper from 1940s about prevention of rickets! Vit D is about so much more than that.

Vitamin D is very low. Your doctor or an endo can work out how much vitamin D3 you need. You might need a leading dose but I just went on 1600iu daily. This has been increased to 2400iu. My vitamin D was 30 in 2019. It is now 75 or above which is the optimal level. Very low vitamin D can also cause a condition called Hyperparathyroidism. The parathyroids control calcium and phosphorous in the blood. Your GP should check your calcium and phosphorous and PTH hormone levels too.
