Jaw/Tooth ache with Liothyronine

In previous posts I've mentioned my poor conversion of T4 to T3 following thyroidectomy over 2 years ago. As a consequence in January I went to a private endo and got a script for 90 tablets of Thybon Henning T3 20mcg which I got from Roseway Labs. I started taking these which I split 10mcg am and 10mcg pm, however within a couple of days or so I got some lower jaw and tooth pain, but put this down to some new cholesterol lowering meds I had just started, consequently I stopped taking them. My jaw/tooth pain disappeared.

2 weeks ago, once I was sure it wasn't my cholesterol meds I decided to try again, but at a much lower dose - cutting the 20mcg in half, then the 10mcg in half again and the 5 in half again - though by then the remaining pill was very small and crumbly. I took these 2.5mcg for about 12 days and then developed the same left lower jaw/tooth ache. I almost made a dentist appointment, but decided to stop the Liothyronine instead and the pain disappeared after about 36 hours.

I had been taking Levo at 119mcg/day and reduced it to approx 106mcg when taking the Lio. I'm now back up to 119mcg. I did seem to have more energy and 'bounce' whiltst on the Lio. but this might just have been the placebo effect.

Has anyone else had this problem and is there a solution?

How do you take the T3 with the Levo.

Once your FT3 is at a good level your cholesterol with lower anyway. Cholesterol is needed in the brain and the body.

Hi, Thanks for your reply, I take the levo in the middle of the night approx 0100-0200hrs and the lio was at 0700-0730hrs. My latest blood test just over 2 weeks ago (before taking the 2.5mcg lio, but 1 month after the 20mcg dose)T3 was 40% through the range (3.7 on range of 2.9-4.9 pnol/L). My T3 had been averaging out at about 30% through the range.

My cardiologist wants to reduce my cholesterol - (total was 8.8 and LDL 6.9) down by half - I was on statins which I stopped 1 year ago. I'm now on Praluent.

I have no thyroid either and always find that when my FT3 is high I feel very well, when it drops pain starts. My blood pressure started to rise last year and I bought Hawthorn Extract it not only lowered my BP but also my Cholesterol too. In Germany even the GP's there prescribe it. It's been used for over 100 years and works well. It could be that the T3 make doesn't suit you, but I think it's just your body trying to work out a few things and getting it wrong, mine does the same. Yours for some reason is teeth.

When your FT3 is high enough your cholesterol will drop anyway.

Have you looked at other possibilities?

For example, I had jaw/TMJ pain and found that B12 made a big difference. (Nothing to do with liothyronine which I don't take.)

Not suggesting there is no association between liothyronine and the pain, but maybe it is not quite as direct as it might appear. That is, the liothyronine might be allowing something else to happen which causes pain.

Thanks for your input helvella. Interesting that the lio might be allowing something else to happen, very difficult to pin down what though. I do take Vit b complex along with magnesium, Vit D and K2. It's strange that the pain pretty much went when I stopped the lio.

I'm going to email the endo who prescribed the lio and see what he has to say. Hopefully he's come across this before and the solution is to change brands or something.

A snippet that probably won't help!

For years I had a deep rumble of pain around my left lower wisdom tooth. The intensity varied from almost nothing to really annoying. But in hindsight I have wondered if it was when I was actually at my most healthy, best nourished, times that it started trying to grow up and erupt?

It could be something like that, it was certainly a 'grumbly' type pain. I'll se what happens from now on.
