just below normal Vit D symptoms

My husband has been suffering fatigue, low mood, and poor sleep over the last few months. Quite comprehensive blood tests only showed that his D3 level is just insufficient at 49, when acceptable levels should be 50+. Is it possible that his symptoms could be down to his D level? GP recommended he supplements, which he’s just started. A few months back his T4 was low normal and TSH was around 2.75, but the GP didn’t think his thyroid was a problem.

Yes it makes you feel lousy

Ideally he needs his Vit D 100-150 and can take a loading dose to get things moving... one with K2-MK7 is recommended

Thank you. I didn’t think being just under normal would make such a difference! They need to increase the normal range! He’s now taking 65ug with K2. There’s also some in his multivitamin but not enough. I feel hopeful he may feel better in a month or two! 🙂

But I’m reading if it’s too high, that’s dangerous. 🙈

Sorry the mix of units always throws me 65ug = 2600iu so a low dose? At this time of year I take 4000iu daily just to maintain and he needs a good boost first

I guessed his weight... but this is based on him already taking 2600iu and aiming for 125

His multivitamin has 600iu D2 but he hasn’t taken it consistently. He is now, plus he’s added 2500iu D3 + some K2. He’s 187lbs and 77.

Ok, so the above guidance is right for him

I wouldn't take a vitamin D supplement with D2 in. I'd only ever take D3.

I have taken D2 (decades ago) but it never did anything for me.

I know that some vegetarians and vegans are not happy taking D3 because it usually has an animal origin (lanolin from sheep wool is one source I have heard of).

But in recent years I have heard of D3 being sourced from lichen. I've never tried it, but have just read that it exists.

Just a personal anecdote :

When I first got my vitamin D tested my level was well below optimal but was in the NHS range. I thought I might be able to raise my levels with just 1000 iU Vitamin D3 per day. After a few months a test showed my level had actually dropped.

I doubled my dose to 2000 iU and this just maintained my level where it was.

To actually raise my level I need 4000 iU per day. It doesn't rise quickly but I'm happy with the level I take.

Got it wrong. The D3 is only 2500iu, so he’s going to take 2 for the time being.

Thank you. Very helpful! Hopefully 6500iu D3 will

help him. 🤞🏻
