Latest blood test results. Advice please!

Hello. I just wanted to ask some advice as the last two blood tests I have had showed a borderline underactive thyroid, but the GP won't do anything until the TSH is over 10. My previous blood test showed a reading of 5.9 mu/L.

However, they decided to do yet another repeat blood test to rule out anything else. Unfortunately, this was done at 12pm because it was the only appointment I could get. I didn't eat anything before the appointment, but now my TSH level looks much better at 3.8 mu/L and they are not going to do another. Can it actually get better, or is this just wishful thinking on their part?

The rest of my results are as follows:

T4 13.3pmol/L [11.0-22.6]

TPO 35 u/mL [0.0-60.0]

Ferritin 124 ngl/ml [10-291]

Folate 6.4 [3.0-14.4]

Vit D 14.7 nmol/L [deficient under 25]

B12 330 ng/L [211.0-911.0]

They wouldn't test T3. The GP has put me on a high dose of vitamin D to sort the deficiency, but I guess what I want to know is if it's likely I feel lousy because of low vit D or if it's more likely low because there is a potential thyroid issue. I still feel absolutely exhausted. Hair is falling out, nails are constantly breaking, and zero motivation to do anything. I've also been given a 2 week dose of sleeping tablets because I cannot sleep at night no matter what I do. I'm tired of moaning at them, but the GP just fobbed me off by saying I'm probably perimenopausal.

There are 2 ways of getting a diagnosis and beginning treatment.

One of them is a TSH over 10, the other is 2 TSH results above range 3 months apart, both tests taken on the NHS. This is stated in the NICE guidelines so you might want to show your GP them.

You could always try a different GP at the same practice in a few months time to get new bloods run. This time be sure to wait for a 9am or earlier appointment. It really does make a differnce. Fast that morning prior to the test and only drink water.

In the mean time you should be working on low vitamin levels of which you have a few.

Once you finish the GPs vit D prescritpion you will need to buy yourself a supplement otherwise it will just fall back to where you started.

Vitamin D should be around 100 - 150. Buy one that includes vit K2 to help it go to your bones. Some are available in oil or you can take it with an oily meal for better absorption. Many members like the ‘Better You’ range of mouth sprays that contain both bit D & K2. Use this calculator to work out how much to take to get your level to 100-150.grassrootshealth.net/projec...

Ferritin looks good but can be falsley raised if inflammation is present.

B12 is low. Are you vegan or vegetarian?

If not: do you have symptoms of B12 deficiency? The reference range for B12 is very wide and cut off point too low. theb12society.com/signs-and...

If you do then you should discuss this with your doctor for further tests for Pernicious Anaemia.

If not, then start with a methyl B12 sublingual spray or lozenge for a week, then add a good B complex. Once you run out of the separate B12 just continue with the B complex.

A B complex contains both B12 & folate. Your folate is too low. Some options for B complex:

Slightly cheaper options with inactive B6:

Contains B6 as P5P an active form:

Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate it. You clearly have so much more knowledge than any of the doctors I have seen and this is all very helpful. I thought the other vitamins looked low, but I have learned that they do nothing if it's within their reference parameters. I was really surprised that my vitamins were deficient because I've been taking supplements for as long as I can remember. Clearly, I haven't been taking the right ones.

I'm not veggie or vegan and I have what I considered to be a really healthy diet which is why I wondered if vitamins could be affected by thyroid issues and vice versa. Hopefully, I'll start to feel better once I get some supplements into my system.

I really appreciate the time and effort you've gone to in your response and the links which point me in exactly the right direction. Thank you so much. I will definitely request repeat bloods in a couple of months if things aren't markedly improved.
