Hair issues

In a way, hair is the least of my issues with thyroid meds....or, in fact, lack thereof.....but the hair loss and strange frizziness is particularly annoying. I had a thick, shiny healthy head of hair before T3 removed, after 22 years, and T4 lowered.

Finally, after almost 18 months, thanks to my second endocrinologist, my T3 has recently been restored from nil back to the former 10mcg/day with 100 T4. In fact I am still in a battle to get a proper prescription for the T3 but that's an all-too-familiar story.

I lost a lot of hair in the past year and it's now thin and frizzy and very far removed from how it was. Is it possible for it to recover and do I need to take anything other than Vt B, D3, K2, Fe?

I will be 70 tomorrow and feeling very uncelebratory as I have lost my confidence. and well-being. Any useful tips would be very welcome.

Get full thyroid and vitamin testing done yourself privately 6-8 weeks after being back on T3

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription….and same brand of T3

When were vitamin levels last tested

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

On T3 - day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day with last dose 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

I would suggest that, if you can, you get zinc and copper tested. Low zinc and have a terrible effect on the hair.

Zinc and copper need to be balanced, but when you're hypo, one is often too low, which means the other is too high. It's often the zinc that is low, but best to get them both tested together. :)
