Help with hair problem

Hi, has anyone lost hair (body or head) due to thyroid imbalance? My hair has gone frizzy and I have lost lots in the past 5 months to the point now I have fine, frizzy and very thin hair where in places you can see my scalp. I've also been diagnosed with alopecia which is an autoimmune disorder. My doctor changed my medication from 150 down to 125mg in May and I'm going for a blood test on Monday to see my new count as she thinks I may be border line and need to reduce again. My hair loss has now reduced when washing and brushing; I'm so wondering if this is because change of lower meds are now in my system?

I have a little regrowth which I'm loving seeing and I'm just praying it continues but I am interested in hearing if anyone else has gone through this?

Thanks

I have Grave's disease flare-ups for the last 10 years or so. First time I took PTU for about 18 months and my hair never fell out. 2nd flare-up, took PTU for about 6 months and my hair started falling out. Doctor said that sometimes medication causes that and took me off it. Within 3 months, hair stopped falling out. Had another flare-up and within 3 months of taking PTU, hair started falling out. Stopped taking it, 3 months later hair stopped falling out. Decided I couldn't take the hair falling out anymore and tried some natural alternatives. Nothing helped much and ended up going on Methimazole (I'm in the US and it's the same as Carbimazole in the UK. I had used Methimazole once before but it caused hives. Took it with antihistamine this time and it was fine). Within about 4 weeks my hair started to fall out. I've really don't want to get RAI or my thyroid removed. I had tried everything before to help the hair falling out and nothing worked until I found some hair vitamins on Amazon. It had really good reviews and other people who had hair loss from medication said it really worked. And it did! I'm on my 4th bottle and my hair loss and almost completely stopped. And it's growing like crazy. I'm pretty sure all my hair loss issue have been caused by thyroid medication. It's a side effect for most of them. If you want to PM me, I'll tell you the vitamins I'm using. I'm not affiliated with them in any way but I swore if I found anything that worked I would tell others.

You can name your vitamin supplements on here, it's not a problem and may help others.

Would be very interested to know the vitamins you have been using. My hair has thinned and I'm using hair extensions to compensate, but it would be great to have my own hair growing long and thicker.

Hey thanks; that's interesting. My hair loss has really reduced but im wanting it now to grow back and get thicker do you think the vitamins helped it grow back quickly?

I've been taking it for about 4 months and have lots of new growth. I would assume in another 6 months I will start to actually notice the difference as far as thickness.

Hair loss was massively exaggerated in me a few months after childbirth (each time). I put it down to a big drop in thyroid hormone, low iron and vitamins like b12 and vitamin d which is really a pro-hormone. Since I found out about thyroid much later in life, I realised it was because I had also had low stomach acid so some minerals and vitamins were not getting absorbed properly. I would be very dubious about you lowering your dose of thyroxine, just to suit an arbitrary (probably TSH) result for your doctor, you may very soon regret it - and in autumn we often tend to need a dose increase to prepare for winter. So don't let them bully you - go by your symptoms and post a full thyroid panel with ranges and vitamins on here, so you can receive targetted and appropriate advice.

Yes I lost all the hair on my arms, face, legs and underarms but its NOT that I had hair like sasquatch but I did noticed little bumps on my face and arms one day upon closer look all my hair was in tiny balls on my skin and then just gone...it's very strange and of course the endos and functional medicine doctor have (no clue) as to why I lost my hair although I suspect thyroid hormones.

This was 8 months ago still no hair regrowth...I'm very lucky I did not lose the hair on my head.

Oh sure! I thought we weren't supposed to name things on the forum for some reason. It's called Hairfluence...

Hi looked for these on Amazon appears to be two with that name.

Are yours the Nutravita ones ?

There is also zhounutrition hairinfluence that are a lot more expensive that are on Amazon too

Which are you taking ?

As a side note on Nutravita website they are selling them at 1/4 of the price! their full price is more than Amazon but still loads less for bottle of 60 at 4.99 !!

when I googled. Can you confirm which ones you have thanks

£4.99 seems a sell off price .....wonder why?

The one I'm taking is made by zhzou. On the US site it is $21.99. Someone else from the UK said they bought it on iHerb

The only things you can't mention are doctors' names or anything else that identifies a doctor, and sources for prescription-only medicines. Regarding doctors' names though, I think you can mention them if you are going to praise them to the skies. The remotest whiff of criticism means you can't mention them.

SeasideSusie Is my interpretation of the rules accurate?

We can name non-prescription items and where to obtain them on the forum, no problem with that.

Prescription only items we can't name sources of supply on the open forum but they can be discussed in private messages.

Doctors we can ask about on the forum, eg a post title can say something along the lines of "Does anyone have any experience of Dr XXXX". Replies can only be made by private message, we can't discuss them on the forum without their permission. Posting guidelines cover this:

27. Do not post information about specific endocrinologists or doctors on the main board without their permission as this may result in unwanted attention from certain areas of the medical profession. If you wish to discuss a particular endocrinologist or doctor, you may mention his/her name and location, providing that you ask for comments by private message only.

We can, of course, mention Dr Peatfield although he is now retired. We can also point people in the direction of Dr Myhill's website.
