Coarse, tangled hair a thyroid issue?

I've always had soft, fine and breakable hair but recently it's become quite thick and coarse, and is constantly tangled... I hadn't connected it with my thyroid but wondering if anyone else has the same problem. I know so many of you experience hair loss, but if anything I lose less now than I ever did before my thyroid problems... but that might be because I can't get a brush or comb through it!

Thanks radd , I guess the silence means no one else has had this problem so maybe not hashimoto's related

I have noticed this happens to me too.

I've never been big on brushing my hair and it's always been long. I used to ALWAYS get a dreadlock form at the base of my skull.

My hair brushing habits haven't changed but I've not had a dreadlock since I started taking thyroid replacement.

My T4 is below range at the moment and my hair feels weird at the moment. It's almost like Lego hair; one massive lump of hair rather than individual strands.

Hello Kriticat ,

I don't have this problem myself, but I offer an anecdote about a friend from several years ago, who went on the Apple Diet, (that's apple shape not eating apples!).

She cut out grains, & balanced her blood sugar, amongst other things,....& one of the positive & surprising things she found, was that a big coarse knot of hair at the back of her head, that she'd had since childhood, disappeared!

In fact, her hair became much smoother & more manageable overall. Obviously, that was over some months, and not directly thyroid-related, but diet did have a big impact.

My friend's gone on to be a nutritional therapist specialising in Diabetes...

That's interesting, thanks for the info... I really hope I don't have to cut grains out. I am gluten free but eat loads of oats and brown rice! My blood sugar levels are good so hopefully it's not that. Actually I am quite enjoying the appearance of my hair after a lifetime of fine flyaway stuff! Not being able to comb or brush it seems a small price to pay, and it's also coincided with me going quite grey, which I know coarsens the texture. The reason for posting was that I wondered if others had the same experience.... I was dreading everyone saying, oh yes, that's how my hair went before it all fell out!
