Hello Not sure where to start. I had some blood tests done through Blue Horizon because of many symptoms I thought were hyperthyroidism. I had, two years ago, finally managed to get my weight just above 9 stone. Then over the course of a month went down to 8 stone 4. Drenching night sweats were awful. I continued to lose weight until I went to 7 stone 3 !! Lots of tests but not a full thyroid test as my baselines were normal. All of my family have thyroid problems. My dad had Hashimotos. Nothing was found to explain all my symptoms. I'm 46 now so we tried hrt. It was not good. I very slowly got back up to 7 and a half stone by March this year. Between March and now I've put on nearly half a stone !! The scales flicker on 8 stone now which is a quick weight gain for me. I got my results and they seem within ranges. I was hoping for a bit of an understanding of the results. My doctor has not been great in helping me find out why I feel so ill and being honest I'm scared to go back !!

Here are my results.

TSH - 2.38 ( 0.27 - 4.20)

T4 TOTAL - 94.6 (66 - 181)

FREE T4 - 14.4. ( 12.0 - 22.0)

FREE T3 - 5.01 (3.1 - 6.8)

Vitamin D 86 ( Optimal 75 - 200)

I take a high dose Vitamin D everyday on medical advice

Thsnkyou for reading , I hope I haven't wasted time. I'm just feeling so rotten and I'm getting no answers.

Hi Wilderflower, welcome to the forum. :)

As your dad has Hashi's, it would be a good idea to get your antibodies tested. The weight-loss followed by weight-gain that you've just described does sound like Hashi's, because you can swing from false 'hyper' levels to hypo levels with Hashi's.

At the moment, your FT4 is a bit low, but your FT3 isn't too bad, but your TSH says that your thyroid is strugging to get it to that levels.

With Hashi's, levels can fluctuate a lot so you need to keep on testing until your levels get a to a point that will spark your doctor's interest - i.e. TSH over-range, FT4 and /or FT3 under-range and high antibodies.

Well, those antibody results are negative. But, that doesn't mean you don't have Hashi's, because antibodies fluctuate all the time. And, some Hashi's people never even have over-range antibodies. When were these tests done?

OK, so, I would suggest that you leave it for about three months, and them get all the levels tested again. :)

Have you had coeliac blood test

Weight loss and inability to gain weight is extremely common with coeliac

But can also be a hypothyroid issue

vitamin D is good

VITAMIN B12 395 ( 145 - 569 )

SERUM FOLATE 8.55 ( 8.83 - 60.0 )

These are too low

Are you vegetarian or vegan

Do you eat red meat

Drenching night sweats were awful

With night sweats you need testing for Pernicious Anaemia

Low B12 symptoms

b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

methyl-life.com/blogs/defic...

If GP won’t test or prescribed B12 injections you will need to self supplement

With serum B12 result below 500, (Or active B12 below 70) recommended to be taking a separate B12 supplement and a week after starting add a separate vitamin B Complex

Then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), you may be able to reduce then stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

If Vegetarian or vegan likely to need ongoing separate B12 few times a week

B12 drops

Or

B12 sublingual lozenges

uk.iherb.com/pr/jarrow-form...

cytoplan.co.uk/shop-by-prod...

B12 range in U.K. is too wide

Interesting that in this research B12 below 400 is considered inadequate

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Low folate

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid)

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

healthline.com/nutrition/fo...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

thyroidpharmacist.com/artic...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

Thorne currently difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

Other options

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu....

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endo.confex.com/endo/2016en...

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12

I am sure I've had a coeliac blood test.

Recommend trialling absolutely strictly gluten free diet……3-6 months

Only make one change at a time

Address low B vitamins levels first

Then in 2-4 months try gluten free

Hi I noticed your Cortisol levels at 648.0 seem a bit high.

Has your GP mentioned this?

I think high Cortisol can cause many symptoms, including sweating/night sweats.

Maybe someone with more knowledge than myself can help with this.
