Low FT4, normal TSH

Hello

I had a private blood test done, which showed that TSH and T3 were okay, but T4 is low. I also have Thyroid Antibodies.

I am taking Thyroid S. Will increasing the dose help? My vitamin levels were in range.

Thanks for any info. It is so stressful trying to deal with an underactive Thyroid, and my GP is only interested in TSH levels.

I still don't feel well.

It would be helpful if you could post the actual results with their reference ranges so we can see exactly how "low" and "normal" the levels are.

When taking NDT or T3 this tends to lower FT4 so your results would not be unusual but let's see them so we can make a better assessment.

When the thyroid starts to struggle it is common to see Free T4 low and Free T3 high in range or even, sometimes, over the range.

Since T3 is the active thyroid hormone it seems as if the body does its utmost to keep T3 levels up by converting as much T4 to T3 as possible.

Hello Vivienne :

Are your antibodies those of Hashimoto's auto immune thyroid disease ?

Have you been checked out for celiac disease as this can run alongside thyroid AI disease ?

Your last post was 5 years ago when you were only on 50 mcg T4 which for many is just a staring dose - maybe that particular brand didn't suit you - many people find once they find a brand that suits them, they have it stated on their prescription as the ' fillers ' are all different and upset some people.

What was your dose of T4 before switching to NDT - and do you have any results of T3 and T4 from when on T4 - Levothyroxine ?

I do know that with Hashimoto's healing the gut is the first step to aid absorption of the thyroid hormone replacement.

You may well need to look at food intolerances, especially those of gluten, wheat, dairy.

With NDT you blood tests will not look like they did when taking T4 - Levothyroxine.

On NDT you track on the T3 - has this improved from the bench reading you took before you started this experiment and how long did you leave from last dose to blood draw ?

Without seeing any sets of blood tests its difficult to say much - can you share some results ?
