Can I take T3 with tea and coffee?

Hi All,I am getting miss messages about what I can Take my T3 with.

My GP says that I need to allow 4 hours for iron and 2 for food and other supplements. Is that correct?

I hear also that the above applies to T4 but not T3.

I just would like to know what is best. I am trying to do the latter, to be safe but it can be tricky because I take T3 3 times a day so it restricts what I can eat before and after.

Many thanks in advance

There’s no studies but T3 is easily absorbed. Patients used to take it with food in the hope it would slow absorption. I would take it an hour away from coffee or tea but otherwise not worry.

Best to take with water only at least 45-60mins away from food

Do you take your levothyroxine waking or bedtime

Or do you split levothyroxine as two doses….waking and bedtime

Taking T3 with levothyroxine is fine

So 3 doses T3=

Waking, mid afternoon and bedtime - approx equal 8 hour intervals

Hi Slowdragon,

3 T3 doses = 20, 10 waking, 5 midafternoon and 5 bedtime. I split T4 50mcgrs in the am and 50mcgrs at bed time.

perfect

Just make sure mid-afternoon dose is water only and wait 45mins (ideally) before drinking tea or coffee

Thanks Slowdragon. I only starting the T3 bedtime dose 4 days ago after my last post as suggested here and the improvement is quite significant. Early days, I know but my anxiety is now less severe. Still bad but less intense. Thanks x

many of us find last dose at bedtime improves sleep and perhaps helps balance adrenal levels

Leave the prescribed gaps for Levo. Don't worry about the T3. Many of us take it regardless of eating. I'd probably avoid caffeine for a while but that's it. It's absorbed much more easily than Levo. I would feel it hit my system if I took it on it's own. I preferred it with some food close by. If you are taking it 3 times a day then you are prone to making your life miserable trying to leave such big gaps. Life is for living, not clock watching. Just stick to the Levo rules as much as you can.

I do always try to take my morning dose any time between 4 and 6am (depending on what time the dog wakes me up) and then leave at least half an hour before anything else, but my afternoon dose at 4pm is quite happily washed down with coffee with no ill effects! Finding your own optimum by the “try-it-and-see” method is usually the best way.

Thanks! I dont have so much of an issue with the walking dose or the vestimenta one. It is the mid afternoon but now I now I domt have to be so strict it is great news. Already changing the eve one to bedtime it has been amazing. 4th day without the horrible morning anxiety which was crippling me. I dont want to talk about it to loud just yet....but I am do happy. ThanksCarlax

Just scrolling, as you do, hope you don't mind me jumping on your post? I restarted T3 just over 2 weeks ago, morning 5mcg taken with levo, no problem. Added 2nd 5mcg 3 days ago, I'm struggling with timing as some say take on empty stomach, 2 hours after food and leave 1 hour after, how that will fit if/when I add the third dose I've been prescribed I don't know. I thought I read that T3 is not as sensitive, if that's the word, to food and drink. I also awoke this morning with anxiety or adrenaline rush, please reassure me this will settle, had it a couple of hours now, it came out the blue, for no reason. I really want the added T3 to help not add more issues.
