I gave up trying to get my GP to test the things that need testing and use Medichecks - I get their all singing all dancing thyroid test.

If I just want to test my Vitamin D I use this one - I prefer a capsule to a tablet - these are quite small too vitamindtest.org.uk/.

I adjust the amount of D3 I take depending on the test results I just use this Vitamin D3 365 Softgels (Full Year Supply) | 1000IU Vitamin D Supplement | High Absorption Cholecalciferol Vitamin D (Vitamin D3 softgels Easier to Swallow Than Vitamin D Tablets) by Nu U Nutrition. I alternate with their 3000IU capsules depending on my test results.

Your Vit D level last March was 45nmol/L and recommendations were made previously here

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

and in this thread here

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Have you been supplementing? If so you haven't progressed very far with your level.

You might want to check out a recent post that I wrote about Vit D and supplementing:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

and you can check out the link to how to work out the dose you need to increase your current level to the recommended level.

Your current level of 48nmol/L = 19.2ng/ml

so if you check out the Vit D Council's recommendation you will see they suggest that you should take 4,900iu D3 daily, the nearest dose to buy is 5,000iu.

You should retest after 3 months and if you've reached the recommended level according to Vit D Council, Vit D Society and Grassroots Health of 100-150nmol/L (Grassroots Health's recent blog post recommends at least 125nmol/L) then you adjust dose to a maintenance dose which you'll have to find by trial and error.

Don't forget the important cofactors Vit K2-MK7 and magnesium that are needed when taking D3.

The Natures Provides supplement suggested by Eeyore is a good one and as 3,000iu = 5 drops then that's 1 drop = 600iu so for 4,900iu you'd need 8 drops to give the nearest amount of 4,800iu. As that's D3 plus K2-MK7 you only need to buy magnesium.

There are many types of magnesium so we have to check to see which one is most suitable for our own needs:

naturalnews.com/046401_magn...

The following link is included purely to describe the different forms of magnesium, ignore the fact that it mentions calcium is necessary, calcium is only necessary if you test and found to be deficient and then your GP should address that

explore.globalhealing.com/t...

and ignore the fact that this is a supplement company, the information is relevant:

swansonvitamins.com/blog/ar...

Magnesium should be taken 4 hours away from thyroid meds and as it tends to be calming it's best taken in the evening. Vit D should also be taken 4 hours away from thyroid meds. Vit K2-MK7 should be taken 2 hours away from thyroid meds. Don't take D3 and K2 at the same time unless both are oil based supplements, they both are fat soluble vitamins which require their own fat to be absorbed otherwise they will compete for the fat.

Hi SeasideSusie . Quick query please if that's OK? My vit D was 30 in Nov. Dr (hospital consultant, not endo) said buy over counter vit D (chemist OK he said although I know there are mixed views on that) 1000IU, but he didn't mention the cofactors? Should he have done only I just take the Vit D3 1000IU. Also, I'm due another blood test shortly including vit D- unlike levo do I just take the vit as usual on day of test? Many thanks.

but he didn't mention the cofactors? Should he have done only

Unfortunately doctors know very little about nutrients and would have little to no ideas about cofactors needed for some vitamins.

D3 aids absorption of calcium from food and Vit K2-MK7 directs the calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissues where it can be deposited and cause problems such as hardening of the arteries, kidney stones, etc. 90-100mcg K2-MK7 is enough for up to 10,000iu D3.

Magnesium helps the body convert D3 into it's usable form.

I just take the Vit D3 1000IU

Woefully inadequate and it would take forever to raise your current level of 30nmol/L to the recommended level of 100-150nmol/L.

30nmol/L = 12.5ng/L

Check out the link above to the Vit D Council website and you'll see that it's suggested you take 4,900iu per day (5,000iu is the nearest to buy) so advice is the same as above to jones86baldwin. With your level being borderline deficient your GP really should have prescribed, and you could even take 10,000iu a couple of days a week to start with.

TSH is ok at that level if you fee quite well, but if you don't and you think you'd like to try an increase in Levo dose the following list of references is useful . Some taken from UK GP 'update' sources ,and one written for GP's by NHS Specialist Registrars in Cardiology and Endocrinology so there should be no argument about their validity .

All recommend keeping TSH between 0.4/5 and 2/2.5 in patients on Levo. Best to find out where fT4/ fT3 are first, and address any Vitamin levels that need improving .
