change of T3 brand

Hi. My GP finally agreed to give me Liothyronine on the nhs after l bought it for several years on a private prescription. He included Thybon Henning on the computer, l checked online when l got home. However when l ordered them the brand had been removed and l received Mercury Pharma . I called the surgery to speak to my GP but he is on holiday till the 3rd of January. What if any difference would l notice if l take the Mercury Pharma? I can see the difference is one is hydrochloride and the other is sodium. Any help would be appreciated. Yvonne

Now you have an NHS prescription I would just take it and see how you feel. I take mercury pharma sometimes I get Morningside all mixed up in the same months supply. I am on 55 mcg and it's because they have problems with supply. You'll need to prove to them and yourself if you are allergic to any brand. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. I only take 5mg a day added to my t4 and that has been enough to make me feel better. I have taken Thybon for several years and really didn’t want to change brands however Slowdragon has informed me that Thybon isn’t licensed for uk use so l think l have no choice but to try it. Thanks again Yvonne

Thybon Henning is not licensed for use by NHS

Thybon is lactose free.

Are you lactose intolerant?

Choice is

Mercury Pharma - loose in a pot

Morningside healthcare - blister packed

Teva - only one that’s lactose free

How much T3 are you currently taking

Do you split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day

Alternatively

Liothyronine capsules are lactose free

Available as 5mcg, 10mcg and 20mcg

Can’t be split easily

Roma are capsules and that might need to be stated expressly on the prescription.

Thanks for your quick reply. That obviously answers why it was removed. I am not lactose intolerant. I currently take only a quarter of a tablet a day first thing in the morning and my t4 when l go to bed. Will l notice any difference taking the Mercury Pharma? Yvonne

'Will l notice any difference taking the Mercury Pharma? '

YSpencer, the only person that can answer that is you. We all react differently to thyroid medications. Chances are you won't notice any difference, but you do need to try it to find out. Just assume it's not going to make any difference and take it as you normally would.

hiya. I bought thybonn and then changed to mercury and I’ve had TEVA annd morningside and no issues or noticeable difference. You may find splitting in 4 tricky as they are smaller tablets. X

Thanks for that information. I have the tub of Mercury but haven’t opened it. The chemist told me to hang on to them until I’ve spoken to my GP. If they are small l may have to take half and reduce the t4. I’m hoping to speak to my Endo next week who may be able to advise me further, Many thanks for your help. Yvonne

I think l have come to the same conclusion. I don’t get on with Teva t4 so would be reluctant to try that brand. Thanks for you help. Yvonne

Teva T4 and Teva T3 are not comparable. Teva T4 contains mannitol, (which is the ingredient that causes problems for some people) Teva T3 does not contain mannitol. So don't make any assumptions about Teva T3 if you were to be given it 😊

More good information, thank you again. Yvonne

YSpencer, folks tend to concentrate on whether pills are lactose free or if they contain mannitol. I have an issue with acacia powder. T4 by TEVA made me very ill with awful stomach issues because they used acacia powder as a filler. I take Almus/ Actavis T4 mostly available at Boots.

The T3 was a problem because when NHS agreed to provide me T3 Advanz and Morningside ( which contain acacia powder) were only T3 available on NHS and I wouldnt take TEVA on principle.

I believe it is now possible to get Thybon Henning by "special request". I take Sigma Pharma T3 which was from US at the time but is now available in UK. My meds come from a pharmacy that will supply my specific requests as stated on my prescription and sends them in the post, all at NHS cost. Hope you get sorted.

Good Morning. Things are so complicated aren’t they. I am going to try and contact my Endo for some information. I would be delighted if they could supply Thybon having taken it for so long. Thank you for giving me a bit of hope. Hopefully you can continue to obtain what’s suitable for you. Yvonne
