Hypo symptoms worse when sitting?

Hi all!

Had a quick query, and recognise the title might sound a bit bonkers! I have Hashi's, diagnosed in March, initially on thyroxine, but then moved onto NDT in September and have been generally feeling better than I was... I had a bit of a break from work for lots of reasons but started a new job today - it is working from home.

I woke quite early in anticipation (had been sleeping really well prior to this), but when I sat down to work I seemed to get all my hypo symptoms back and felt really fluey and achey all day whilst at my desk. Much better now having warmed up with an electric blanket and sitting in a a more comfy reclined position.

Just can't decide if it is the tiredness (and was colder today) or if there is something about sitting and not moving that seems to make my symptoms worse (does anyone else experience this). I seem to feel better when moving around.

Am awaiting blood results, which might be telling - currently on 2 grains of NDT a day, and on iron and Vit B12 supplements and Vit D.

May have just been a one off, but it was really quite a noticeably yucky feeling!

Just interested in experiences of others re sedentary work.

Many thanks in advance.

This rings a real bell.

I have wondered what careers are good for those of us who - for Raynauds/ brain fog / dips in energy levels or anything else - need to move around.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply.... Was thinking perhaps a standing desk might even be helpful. But yes, would love to be able to do all my desk work with the power of my thoughts alone whilst going on some nice long and gentle walks 🙂

have you ever used the Pomodoro techniques of using an alarm?

Have tried to a couple of times, but sadly a lot of my day is spent in video calls etc., ,so Pomidoro doesn't quite work for that! And then in between I have to get my head down with emails/reports etc and just get carried away!

Gah, yes.

Can you take any of the calls as phone calls and walk while you have them?

My husband does that sometimes

- when it’s his colleagues and not his clients.

kreamtee, 'Was thinking perhaps a standing desk might even be helpful'.

I have one for similar reasons (i.e. have issues with sitting for long periods of time), and can't recommend them highly enough. If you can afford it, get one with a motor, then it takes only seconds to change the height.

Kreamtea, the brain is one of the biggest users of thyroid hormones. You are having to react to different stimuli, your gut and adrenals are involved in the excitement and apprehension of a new job. A sedentary job still takes it out of you.

Thanks @Laloot. Yes, I was astonished at the huge contrast. And I guess getting used to a new system, new people etc. Hadn't appreciated brain activity was such a drain 😂

that's really interesting and explains a LOT.

Interesting discovery about lifestyle and health (not only thyroid I fear) . I have been advised to have breaks from sitting down every 20-25 mins by simply walking about. This may not be practical but it is important to schedule regular movement/walks into the day and not have too many meetings! All the very best.

Perhaps it’s the medication that is causing your symptoms. One of the side effects of thyroid medication is muscle aches. I had similar issues and more, I spiked a fever, when I was taking Armour thyroid, which is porcine based and natural. I switched to synthetic thyroid meds and it helped the achy and feverish situation.
