Hi

So I got seen by GP yesterday, managed to avoid evaporating completely on the way there. I don't drive and its a 15 minute walk. Never felt heat like it I must say. Anyway they are going to refer me to ENT for more evaluation on my balance issues.

I've had a lot of ear popping, cracking and very intermittent ear pain as well. But she checked my ears and they are clear. I mentioned about my forthcoming blood tests at the beginning of August. Due to slightly raised ferritin I've now got an iron panel test booked, more liver profile tests and at my urging due to my low calcium result, she added Vitamin D.

So that's good and saves me paying to test privately.

I am suffering a blocked feeling in my ears, balance issues and had an audiology test the other day. I had none of these symptoms until I started medication for hypothryoidism. I am convinced (for the moment) that the symptoms will resolve once I manage to raise my T3. Doctor is also sending me for a cardiac tape 'because as a hypothyroid patient I'm high risk' and I'm thinking - well, if I was adequately medicated and my T3 was better I wouldn't be having palpitations and be such high risk!! Instead she tells me I'm 'in range' and sends me off for cardio tests to explain the palpitations. It's madness. First line of defence must be your T3 levels?

My ear problems cleared with adequate T3Tests all fine Inc heart scan.

Once read a Paper ( must find it!!) which indicated ear problems in children is an early sign of low T3/ hormone resistance

I was that child!!

DippyDame This is one of my favourite posts, thank you. I am extremely upset by my recent hearing problems and clinging on to the idea that improving T3 will solve it. Especially for this reason (as well as all the other reasons!) I'm going to see someone on Saturday (Endo) well spoken of in here who I hope will agree.

How long did you have hearing problems before they were resolved? My concern is that the longer I leave it the more likely it is to become irreversible. You seem to be anecdotal evidence to the contrary if you had problems since childhood? When was it resolved/cured?

I remember lots of warm almond oil and elegant! bits of cotton wool stuffed in my ears ( long hair to the rescue)....can't remember exactly when but definitely pre-school up to age 8, maybe later .

Checks...nothing obvious as a cause

So they removed my tonsils....aged 4!!

I still have the little dressing gown made for that drama! The ice cream they gave to soothe my throat was good!!

Not aware of any more obvious problems until my 70s....just occasional sore ears over the years which came and went

There wasn't a significant problem until about 2/3 years ago.....stuffy, sore, blocked ears, lightheaded.

My nose was affected too

It wasn't so much hearing loss as earache/ discomfort/ ringing noises

Fast forward...

Things have improved since raising T3.....

Coincidence? I doubt it.

i now have a hearing aid which I maintain I don't need to use ....and frequently don't.

I get the occasional niggly discomfort but in the greater scheme of things I ignore it till it goes again.....

I'm so ancient now and totally convinced that most of my health issues have their genesis in life long low cellular T3 - and say so - that the GPs in my medical practice more or less leave me to it....or ask what would I like to be done.

My notes probably say " crackpot"!

Sorry....I digress and rant!!

I detest that phrase " in range" it's totally unhelpful....

Do you have recent lab results?

I'd say keep an eye on your FT3 and don't listen to any drivel about TSH

Good luck.

Hi DippyDame , Yes I have lots of lab results. My most recent ones from late June show T3 32.43% through range and T4 64% through range.

In early July my Endo did not want to agree to raise my dose because she said my palpitations showed I was overmedicated. I think my palpitations, hearing issues, swollen ankles, hair loss, fatigue show I am undermedicated, not overmedicated. We agreed as a compromise that my dose could go up 5mcg a day, which I think is totally inadequate, so now I'm a 77kg woman on 92.8mcg a day 4 months after diagnosis.

I need more T3, direct or indirect, so I'm looking for an Endo who will agree with me or give me a convincing reason why not.

Sorry, I just realised that i have hijacked Sparklingsunshine thread. Sorry! I'll do it no more.

I agree!T3 is miserably low...they just don't get it!

Sorry Sparklingsunshine ... hope something in this chatter resonates

My T3 seems to have left the building recently.

Easily done hijacking but such interesting stuff comes up from the originator as well as the replies.

Oh really? That was me! Had terrible ear issues as a child but never saw a doctor—my mother wasn’t the “take your child to a doctor” sort. :)
