Thybon Henning

At my last blood test (June) my t4 and t3 were in range but at the bottom. I was on 75 levothyroxine and 30 mcg Thybon Henning. My functional practitioner has told me to increase my Thybon by 5mcg a week until I get symptoms of being over medicated, then drop down by 5mcg. I’ve increased my Thybon and am now on 75mcg a day (still on 75 levothyroxine). I don’t feel any different but I’ve gained 10lb in 18 days - I don’t want to gain weight. Can the increased Thybon Henning cause weight gain? I don’t see my doctor until September.

My functional practitioner has told me to increase my Thybon by 5mcg a week until I get symptoms of being over medicated, then drop down by 5mcg.

Presumably you mean that you were told to increase your Thybon by 5mcg daily for a week then the next week increase by another 5mcg daily for a week, then continue these weekly increases?

That is not the way to increase T3. You were already on 30mcg daily so we increase by 5mcg daily then wait 6 weeks for levels to stabilise, retest and assess how we feel. Then if necessary we add another 5mcg daily and retest 6 weeks later, etc. By increasing at the rate you've been told to you can easily overshoot your sweetspot. Unless you give each increase enough time for levels to stabilise you won't know how you've reacted to that amou t of hormone.

What were your test results /ranges before starting to increase and what are they now?

I'm not sure your FP knows much about treating with T3.

What is your FT3 level, that's the most important one when taking T3, it's essential.

4.6 (range 3.1 - 6.8)

Presumably this test included thyroid antibodies? What are those results? Do you have Hashi's?

I'm off to bed now, will reply again tomorrow.

When did you take your last dose of Levo and T3 before your test? Last dose of Levo should be 24 hours before, last dose of T3 should be 8-12 hours before, splitting the previous day's dose of T3 into 3 x 25mcg and last one taken 8-12 hours before test.

Also, how are you taking your thyroid meds? On an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food, with water only and water only either side, at least 2 hours away from any other medication and/or supplements? We always advise this so that nothing affects the absorption of the thyroid hormone.

Also, you have Hashi's, and this can complicate things. You could be going through a Hashi's hypo episode.

Testing should be after minimum of 6-8 weeks on constant unchanging dose and brand of levothyroxine and T3

Was test done early morning, ideally before 9am

Last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Day before test did you split T3, taking last 1/3rd of daily dose approx 8-12 hours before test

He felt that we could get it higher. I was undiagnosed for more that 20 years so when asked by drs how I feel I could say: fabulous from what I was but it was I’ll for so long that I’d forgotten what feeling good should feel like - if that makes sense. So this increase is just a way of finding out if I can feel even better. But I don’t was to get fat again

Essential to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Many people on levothyroxine plus T3 find they need BOTH Ft4 and Ft3 at least half way through range

But only ever increase levothyroxine or T3 not both at same time

And always wait 6-8 weeks after any increase before retesting

I was very intolerant of t4 so the only help I could find was to flee to Dr. Hertoghe in Belgium.

I switched to t3 only.

I was told to increase my thybon by 5 mcg every 2 weeks until symptoms improved, including temp and pulse.

16 years later I still do it this way.

Am a little confised. I thought you said you are on 75mcg of levothyroxine as well? Is it T3 youve been on for 16years? And are you now just taking T3 only? Initially when I introduced ndt and switched from levo and synthectice T3 I was also told to increase every two weeks for the initial doses but that was because I was already on a high level of levo and liothyronine so it was evident my thyroid had no functionality in it. But adter the inital start up (and I had completely stopped taking the synthectics for two weeks as instructed by my doctor) it was one increase then wait 6 weeks. Definately would not increase at the rate you are doing.
