NDT and travel insurance, any problems with cover?

I was wondering what experience people have had with foreign travel insurance and NDT.

The reason I ask is, I have had a few issues with providers in the past who won’t cover certain conditions family members have had, one excuse often being ‘not covering conditions that you are still receiving treatment from a hospital specialist’ 🙄

I had an annual insurance company which I had to cancel as bizarrely (and shamefully, and I discovered against guidelines on their part) was due to them refusing to cover me as I was taking part in the Covid vaccine trial, they stated they ‘couldn’t cover anyone on a medical trial, even if it was to find a Covid vaccine!!’

So, my two main concerns as I am about to embark on travel health insurance again is that providers will either decline to cover me full stop or my thyroid because I am still seeing a specialist (which you have to in order to get an ERFA prescription) or because I am taking ERFA as ERFA is not in BNF (or licensed in U.K. - although I think it maybe in other countries?)

For general discussion. What experience have people had, either positive or negative? Is this an issue that has arisen?

If anyone separately has any suggestions on useful providers who have no issues do PM me.

I am heading to work shortly with no phone access so apologise if I don’t respond to any responses for a while, but looking forward to your thoughts

Thank you 😊

I took out a current account with the Co-op Bank that you pay a monthly amount for because the amount you pay is quite a lot less than the cost of travel insurance and (a) they will insure over 70s [husband] - who pays a TINY additional amount for his declared conditions and (b) "thyroid" in its entirety was covered with no additional cost [I'm on combo lio/levo and see a hospital consultant every year for monitoring].

You open a "normal" {free] account first and can then contact the medical underwriters to make absolutely sure you're covered for everything you need and then "upgrade" or cancel depending on the outcome :) We phoned for a face consultation (given within the week) to open the account x

When I used to need travel insurance (and I haven't since 2007) then you declared any medical conditions. I can't remember if you had to put what particular medication you were taking. I declared hypothyroidism and never had a problem.

Same as others have commented having a bank account seems the best. As I have got quite a few pre-existing conditions we thought I was going to have a problem this year because my husband had reached an age that our current policy would not cover. We searched and were getting quotes in the hundreds when we found that Barclays do a travel pack which includes annual travel for £12.50 a month for both me and him as we have a Barclays account. When we called for the medical conditions I answered all questions honestly, the one you mentioned about seeing a Doctor every year was ok as the question was have you had to see one for non routine or something like that in the past year, I told him I see one every year for check up and he said that was fine. Also I said I had a thyroid condition he said was it under or over so I said under and that was it. Given my main condition was clotting and I take heparin I was shocked I got accepted and the policy covers you till your 79!

Thank you for your responses! Just got back from work so access to my phone again. Really useful and reassuring. 😊
