Parathyroid Adenoma

Does anyone here have any experience with this? During an ultrasound of my thyroid an incidental finding of a small lesion was found which the doc says suggests parathyroid adenoma. My calcium levels were slightly low and then normal on my recent bloods.

Low calcium linked to low vitamin D

Low vitamin D extremely common when hypothyroid

To check parathyroid levels you need vitamin D, PTH and calcium tested together

Have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

Looking at previous posts you were only on 50mcg levothyroxine on last post

Have you had levothyroxine dose increase since then?

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

Was thyroid test done as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Please add actual results and ranges

How low was vitamin D

How much vitamin D are you currently taking

Improving low vitamin D will naturally increase calcium levels

Yes I had one. If your calcium is low or normal it's unlikely an adenoma but not impossible. You need VitD, phosphate, calcium and parathyroid tested at the same time, parathyroid test is time critical so has to be at the lab within an hour or so. It's also unusual to see it on ultrasound, a Sestamibi scan is needed.

When you say unlikely an adenoma, what could it be then?

Could be a thyroid nodule.

Ah of course, I'm being referred for a SPECT scan and have bloods booked and a urine output test booked.
