Hello. I’m new to this post but appreciate all the help people are getting and I wonder if you can help me.
I’m due to have a partial thyroidectomy tomorrow and understand that it could result in sub clinical thyroidectomy. Unfortunately I’ve just found out that Levothyrixone (and also Armour) are histamine releasing and I have a severe histamine intolerance. So I’m stuck because if I go ahead with surgery I might end up with hypothyroidism with no chance of alleviating it, but if I don’t I’m at risk of cancer (the module has an 85%!risk of it being malignant).
My thought is to just put up with sub clinical hypothyroid symptoms for the rest of my life.
But how bad are they? And has anyone else got histamine sensitivity while in Levothyroxine?
Thank you. June

I am no expert but I would want to know for sure if my thyroid was cancerous before having some of it removed , is this not possible? Like I said I am no expert. Regarding histamine I had histamine issues but they were due to estrogen dominance I am not suggesting that is the case with you but just want to make this point as estrogen dominance is not always taken into account , the nutritionist Lara Briden explains it very well on her blog
Thank you for your reply. Its Follicular Thyroid Adenoma and they can't tell if its cancer until they do the op, although they give a grading on the nodule at the Ultrasound and mine is a grade 5 which is classed as highly suspicious of cancer. Thank you for letting me know about estrogen dominance. I'll look into that a bit more!
Thank you. This is what I picked up from ncbi - L-thyroxine treatment caused marked elevation of 5-HT, histamine and glutamate along with the decline in the level of GABA. So I suppose they're not saying that Levothyroxine itself is histamine releasing! But then on this site i've also seen it said that there is a Thyroxine-induced supersensitivity to histamine. I'm getting quite confused! Can you help? Thanks.
hi JPD grace - I too recently learned I am extremely histamine intolerant. I was VERY unwell for 3 years - thyroid overmedicated and then undermedicated and soooo unwell - and FINALLY a new doc did a breath test about 5 months ago and I found out I have SIBO which goes hand in hand with histamine issues. So I went low histamine diet and BAM just like that felt better (not normal but at least I can get through the day). Anyway, I agree Levo and Armour raise histamine levels. I have desperately needed some thyroid med but when I tried to take Levo within a week or so I would become SERIOUSLY unwell - like the flu and hangover with horrible head pressure - and so I would have to stop. WELL, I've learned a LOT since then and with testing realize I can take a tiny dose of T3 and that really helps. My histamine issues we think are gut related and are now working on that. Also I recently learned I am extremely iodine deficient - so I have a lot to work on. Just wanted to reach out and tell you I agree that Levo can rise histamine! Did you find a thyroid med that works for you? Good luck to you!
