Hypothyroidism and covid vaccine

Hello, wondering if anyone knows if under 60s with hypothyroidism are being offered the covid vaccine as part of the "underlying health conditions" group? Or will it be the same vaccination group as your age group, e.g under 50s, under 30s. I've been reading conflicting information about covids effect on people with thyroid disease. Thanks!

Hypothyroidism does not put you into a vulnerable group nor is it listed in underlying health conditions. The underlying health conditions were listed as follows:

chronic respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis and severe asthma

chronic heart disease (and vascular disease)

chronic kidney disease

chronic liver disease

chronic neurological disease including epilepsy

Down’s syndrome

severe and profound learning disability

diabetes

solid organ, bone marrow and stem cell transplant recipients

people with specific cancers

immunosuppression due to disease or treatment

asplenia and splenic dysfunction

morbid obesity

severe mental illness

I have COPD and I wasn't even prioritised, I had to wait for my age group.

hi, thanks for the reply! I have read the list above from NHS websites as priority groups, yes. But I know of people with coeliac disease, crohns disease and hypothryoidism have had/been invited for the vaccine so wondered if the new algorithim had changed things? As these don't appear to be on any lists. Has anyone here with thyroid disease been asked to take the vaccine on the basis that they have thyroid problems?

I have also read this article about how those with thyroid disease should take extra precautions. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl... just trying to figure out what's going on, please don't get defensive - thank you!

Not getting defensive - thank you - no idea why you think that, I'm just stating facts.

I have a 58 year old friend with Crohns' Disease and she hasn't been prioritised.

Nobody here has made a post to the effect that their thyroid disease has given them priority.

Maybe check with your GP or your own Health Authority for the latest information in your area.

It was the tone of your reply ...

Just here sharing and looking for information - thank you!

If you found any tone in my reply it's in your imagination, as I said I stated facts backed up by information from a government website and personal experience, I have no idea what your problem is with my replies but I will bow out, I have better things to do.

I had mine last week. I have hypothyroidism. I was ahead of my age group. But I don't know the reason. I also have a heart arrhythmia, but that's an electrical fault not a heart problem as such. I take a preventer inhaler for mild asthma. And I'm overweight. So I don't know. My area is very efficient and ahead of the curve anyway.

A friend's son in his early 20's had his 2 days ago. He's celiac.

My personal view was to keep well away from the virus if I could because my hypothyroidism isn't well controlled at all. I struggle with everyday activities although I make myself do them. My view was that as I don't convert T4 to T3 very well because of the gene defect Dio2 that the NHS don't acknowledge, I didn't want to run the risk. My body is worn out all the time. Not much fight left in it.

AF has been added to the moderately vulnerable risk group so possibly why you had yours.

thank you for your reply, really helpful. looks like its a combo of things! i was getting a little concerned if i had missed something (after hearing about neighbours with crohns and celiac disease getting vaccinated)

It seems to be operating on a health board by health board basis... My partner (32) has coeliac disease and has been invited for his vaccine next week. In other health boards, they seem to not consider coeliac to be higher need.

The main reasoning behind chrons is that sufferers tend to be on immuno-suppressants, while coeliac's are more likely to have compromised spleen function.

I’m 53 and hypothyroid and had my first vaccine last Saturday. However, I believe I fell into the 16-64 and vulnerable category because of the blood pressure tablets I’m on (v low dose and well controlled) but also mainly the fact that I’m chubby!!! An interesting point though, my son is a physio currently working on DCC in our local hospital and he tells me that the poorliest 30-55 year old patients tend to have either asthma or hypothyroid as underlying conditions. Of course, weight problems are often a symptom of hypothyroidism so it could well be that they are hypo and high BMI. Difficult to know which came first..... the chicken or the egg!

haha like the chicken or the egg analogy! thank you for the reply. interesting to know. I have hypothyroidism but isn't quite under control yet, i'm also being investigated for causes for high ESR inflammatory test results. I recently moved so am changing doctors, and having to move again in april - i was just getting a little concerned that moving around and changing GPs a few times would mean I would 'fall through the cracks' if people with hypo were being offered vaccines! if that makes sense 😀

what do you mean?

oh i see, sorry i didn't know. it seems peculiar to put a ban on discussing the worlds biggest healthcare issue, on a healthcare message board however? what's the reason for the censorship out of interest? is it to stop anti-vax messages?

Iris16257 profile image
Iris16257

understandable then, i guess. not sure a ban on the whole topic is the right way to go, however.... but then you could argue it wouldn't be fair to just ban posts from anti-vaxxers as it limits their free speech? ooooooh it's a minefield.......

Relevant discussion about virus and vaccine issues is acceptable.

I thought that was clear by the presence of this thread:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Which was posted by an admin, has been pinned, and is regularly mentioned in responses by admins.

We do not wish to have lots of (or, indeed, any) discussions about the politics or financial aspects of vaccines.

We do not want to host anti-vaxx or pro-vaxx zealotry.

There is absolutely NO free speech issue. This is a thyroid forum with guidelines which were accepted when you joined which are, broadly, intended to ensure that the overall direction is related to thyroid though allowing some diversions (off topic) posts and responses.

We do not ban people because they are anti-vaxx - at most we might restrict members because they have posted anti-vaxx posts or replies outside our guidelines and, most often, have done so more than once.

If anyone wishes to go outside our guidelines, they are free to go to any other forum, board, social group, or whatever, and say what they wish.
