Covid-19, Vaccines and being Hypothyroid

I was wondering whether having a prior covid 19 infection can cause your hypothyroidism and go a bit wappy. I had my first jab on 20.03.2021. I had a very sore arm with this and felt like I had Flu. It left around a day or so then around a month after I fell ill Later turned out to be under medicated. My second Jab was on 05.06.2021 around a week after I felt okay again plus no affects from the scond jabs. First two jabs were Astra Zenneca. In October 2021 I was working when I thought I was coming down with a cold. I continued working I didn't even think it was covid. I finally took a test around a week later on a lateral flow. To my surprise It was positive. I then walked two miles to a pop up station. A day later it was confirmed I had it. However Covid for me was halfway between a cold and a flu. With a metallic taste and a burning bonfire smell in my nose. Mostly though in the scheme of things I coped well with it. When I tested negative afterwards around a fortnight later though I was out of breath. My fitness had completely gone, having to keep stopping while walking to catch my breath. However I soon got to back to going about as normal. On December 18th I took my booster dose. Probably pointless as I had prior infection this booster was pfizer. I noticed the difference as well. My left arm was in agony for a few days and my left side felt slightly tender. Again I went back to normal shortly after. Just around three months later around March 20th this year. I started to feel as I did last April/May. My question is you have Covid what were the long term affects of it regarding hypothyroidism. Im guessing this question has probably been asked somewhere on here. However with people suffering long Covid and all the symptoms that come with that. There could be a very strong link.

You are almost certainly right. Hopefully brighter people than me will comment but there’s a lot in Long Covid that looks a lot like low T3 or poor conversion of T4 to T3 (which of course is also the case for some cases of Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and ME).

Whether the low T3 is actually one of the body’s mechanisms for forcing you to rest while you heal, I’m never too sure.

I am experiencing worsening of Hypo and we think it is due to Covid. Has anyone found a treatment that helps?

well, i would say we've seen more than a handful of cases on here that do suggest covid and or / vaccine can sometimes preceed a wobble in previously balanced thyroid hormone levels.So i think the potential is there. Of course it's always going to be difficult to be sure , but... my gut feeling is that for some people it is causing problems, but for most it doesn't seem to be .

Some people might have had short lived alterations that they only caught by accidentally testing at the right time after covid.

I doubt there is much research looking at real populations yet, showing people with longer lasting issues involving thyroid levels , cos they don't test most of us more than once a year, so there won't be much data to go off yet., and lots of people will have less frequent testing than usual over the covid period.

There was study posted a week or so ago about 12 New / Relapsed cases of Graves HypErthyroid (with positive TRab , Graves antibodies) within 3/4 weeks following vaccination in one clinic in Sri lanka or somewhere ( forgotten where )

Yep, at the time I didn't think covid affected me too bad. However I think there is definitely a link.

I had slightly low TSH before getting Covid but a year after having covid I found myself hypothyroid, with a even lower TS and T4. I am in the process of searching treatment.

Difficult to find good information now that so much is being deleted on-line.

I have followed ANH - Alliance for Natural Health for many years - receiving their Newsletters. They produced a 29 page White Paper discussing the v@xx and auto-immunity some time ago. Only £3 to purchase.

There are places that discuss treating post v@xx symptoms as if you have the bug and to keep supporting your innate immune system as much as possible.

Here's my experience:

I got very sick from my first dose of Astrazeneca. I still took my second and thankfully wasn't as ill.

Interestingly I was not diagnosed as Hashimoto's or hypothyroid prior to the vaccine. I was only diagnosed after. I suddenly had extremely bad hypo symptoms and was unable to do anything. I got a blood test and all of a sudden I had hypothyrodism, and then they found out Hashis too.

My doctors have all said that the 'shock' of the vaccine might have caused this to happen earlier. Although there's no saying i would never have had this condition later on...

I was most sick after 1st dose. 2nd dose I was fine no ill effects. Booster I felt like my arm had been hacked off

I got covid in December, then never got my booster since. My endo said it's best to wait until we've figured out what's going on with my thyroid and how best to treat it

Yes. In my personal opinion I think the vaccines can mess things up. It stimulates the immune system. The same immune system that attacks the thyroid when you have hashis.

I've just had Covid, took me six weeks to get well and I definitely needed more thyroid hormone to cope.

I’ve been reading articles recently where there is investigation happening about this very thing. Numerous cases across the globe of people acquiring thyroid issues following covid infections.

I believe my own was caused by consistent repeated tonsillitis. So, a new worldwide virus is therefore likely to cause triggering of autoimmune conditions in people who are susceptible …. It’s not yet clear if this is exaggerated in covid or simply that the numbers are numerous as the numbers of infections are also numerous.
