Hypothyroidism and the flu vaccine.

Hi I heard on the radio an advert for the fly vaccine ordinarily I just ignore adverts but this one caught my attention. It said that any one with a life long condition or who take medication daily should ask for the vaccine. Obviously having an under active thyroid and taking thyroxine daily I fall into this category. But I dont know if its wise, I've never had the vaccine before and was only diagnosed kune 13. In the last 4 weeks I have been poorly twice with winter illnesses and worry the vaccine will make me poorly but if I dont get it I will be poorly over winter any way. I'm already dreading the prospect of sore joints when the cold weather really kicks in.

Kind rgds sazzles.

I think anyone with a long term illness needs to educate themselves about all possible aspects of it. Then we will all be in a better place to make the judgement that is correct for us.

There are views for and against. But most people are only aware of one side of the argument

I'm not so sure of any side of it really.

My feeling is that there is a lot of hype and that Big Pharma has done an amazing job selling it to the NHS. The fact that school children are now to be given it, not for their own sake but to stop the spread of it to other people, is scandalous. Not enough is known about long term effects and any studies done are probably via Big Pharma and will be flawed. I might live to regret it but I am not having it. Everyone must make his or her own decision.

I personally would not go there. There are many viruses out in the big world and a vaccine cannot protect you from them all. I would ensure your VitD levels are OPTIMAL and continue to take a good dose even if they are - especially throughout the winter.

Flu vaccines are good earners for the Docs and Big Pharma. They prey on the vulnerable. I have read they contain nasties too. So by all means read what you can and then you will make an informed judgement.... Sorry to be cynical - but I have Hashimotos/Crohns and have never had a flu jab. I do take 10,000IU's of VitD and lots of VitC too....it may just help.

If you type Flu Vaccine into the Search Unlocked Box on the Green Bar above - and then press Enter on your keyboard - lots of relevant posts will appear. That is where I found the one above... :-)

I have opted against. But it really is important for you to start reading far and wide so that you can best understand how best to control your condition. To just trust wholeheartedly in the conventional medical approach may leave you wanting

Apparently they do a special one now for people with allergies etc made from caterpillars (it made my neighbour with lupus really ill last year). Gross or what? Another med with no real scientific proof of efficacy. When I was a kid and they inoculated the whole school, the allergic kids (inc me) were always given a test before being allowed to have the vaccine - I was always allergic and ever had it. I also remember as a teen and young adult being reminded by my GP NOT to have it as it was not suitable for (and not tested on) people with asthma. Why would anyone take a drug when they are part of the group it isn't tested on? I think it's not tested on any of the groups that the NHS are targeting.

The whole flu vaccine thing winds me up as much as the statin thing. Personally I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. My immune system has enough to deal with at the moment and flu vaccines can make some people ill. There is no guarentee that the virus is the right one as it's based on one going around elsewhere and the vaccines are made ultra quick with no test time. I'm anti medication that has been tested alot for years but something produced so fast scares me. Just my four penneth.

As this is a thyroid forum, many people posting here will have decided against the flu vaccine. This may be for a variety of reasons but I suspect a big one is that the poor treatment thyroid problems receive in the NHS makes us very distrustful. I for one however have already had mine. I have a long tern chest condition and wouldn't dream of trying to go through winter without it. I also have a pneumonia jab every few years. If your only medical issues are thyroid ones though, I would think very carefully. It may be enough for you to rely on the basic defences of washing your hands frequently and thoroughly, using 'First Defence' or similar and keeping up your vitamin intake.

I have the Flu vaccine every year because I get Pneumonia with a cold (I am 42) Never had a side effect in my life.

Hubby works for a major motor manufacturer in uk and they offer it to every employee each year, they wouldn't do it if it wasn't cost effective at reducing employee sickness numbers.

It's a personal choice but a lot of money goes into producing the flu vaccine in an effort to reduce death rate.

I've had the flu shot every year since I had pneumonia in 1993.

After getting diagnosed and treated for hypothyroidism in 2003, I continued to receive the flu shot and got subactue thyroiditis 8 or 9 times. This last year, 2013, was the worst. I was laid up for over 6 months, feeling as if I had both a case of thyroiditis and flu.

Now I'm weighing the pros and cons of flu shots for the first time in twenty-one years.

I had pneumonia one year, then the flu and Pneumonia jab together the following. Became really sick, my throat swelled badly had a lump in my neck. GP was really concerned. Antibiotics for two week sorted it. I have told him never again even though I have heart failure. He agreed with me!!

Well, that's brilliant advertising, isn't it!!!

"any one with a life long condition or who take medication daily should ask for the vaccine."

How vague can you get! They now have millions of people panicking without really knowing if their 'life-long condition' is one they are talking about or not! It could mean anything. Heart disease, diabètes, asthma, anything. You can't tell me that this 'statement' applies to everyone of these people.

Besides, you are not taking 'medication', you are taking thyroxine, which is a hormone. It is not medication in the normal sense of the word. So does that still apply to you? Meehhhh.... I think that needs careful consideration.

Many people above have said that you need to know your disease in able to make an informed decision rather than a knee-jerk reaction - which is what this advert is counting on! (Be very wary of adverts, it means someone is selling something.) So, get reading! lol

Hugs, Grey

Thank you all for your replies I see both sides of this now. I think for the time being I shall put it off as it worries me too much that it may make me ill.
