Vitamin D supplementation and blood results

Hi everyone 💗

Just a little question my vitamin D level was 29 my endo wrote to my gp telling him that I needed supplementation, I've been on this for over six weeks now I went to my surgery for my thyroid pannle bloods to be done I asked why their were no vitamin D on the list, the nurse said we don't do vitamin D, I told her I'd been supplementing vitamin D for over 6 weeks now.. So surely I will need to see if its improving!! After a to and frow she finally agreed to put it down on the list, but refused, folate fertine and B12.. I advised her that having no thyroid and taking T3 alone, vitamins and minerals can be leached from the system, she ignored this, and still refused to do them, is she acting in my best interest?? Should I take this further as I'm sure the above should be done when you have thyroid illness

Thanks if you read my post

I think you are right as, usually, when we've been instructed by an Endocrinologist - that blood tests results are important to know whether we need to reduce/increase any vitamins/minerals..

I would write to your GP and ask what the surgery's rules are and request your doctor to phone you.

Hi shaws,Haaa I'm laughing as just before reading these reply to my posts I've just had a message from my surgery, I've to make an app to discuss my latest blood results I only had them done on Mon, so I know their not good, I will be discussing the vitamin D and the rest at this app, and for the last 2 weeks I've suffered from a bad colitis flare up, with me having very loose bowels with blood in them and in the muccus,, lots of pain, been confined to bed, I mentioned this on Monday as I dragged myself down to have the blood drawn, but the staff didn't seem really bothered just said no app available this week try next week 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I had a very similar experience when first diagnosed as hypo by and endo through low vitamin d! I was put on a supplement and then asked GP to retest. He refused because they only test once a year. When I asked if you could take too much vitamin d, he said he didn’t know, but he did know you could take too much vitamin a. Ye gods. You can take too much vitamin d! If you can afford to test privately it is not terribly expensive. I didn’t at the time, because I didn’t think I should have to, but that kind of stubbornness delayed me on my path to getting better, so I regret it.

My vit d seems to stay consistently low no matter how much I take. I have recently experimented with ridiculous doses for a couple of weeks, so we will see what result private testing brings. As you can see, I have finally bitten the bullet on that! I have also changed the supplement so that it is, one hopes, better absorbed and directed to the right places.

For the sake of £29, what was I thinking?! My current GP (not the idiot who “didn’t know” whether you could take too much!) tests vit d once a year, because he likes a good blood test... as long as it isn’t for T3. Another story ;)

GP budget usually only allows vitamin D test once every 2 years

You will need to test vitamin D twice year when supplementing

How much vitamin D are you currently taking

Vitamin D NHS postal kit

vitamindtest.org.uk

monitormyhealth.org.uk/

Also vitamin D available as separate test via MMH

Likely to need to test folate, ferritin and B12 annually yourself

Are you self supplementing vitamin B complex /B12

Hi slowdragonOn 800iu and better you spray 1000, I only use the spray on alternative days, as I don't want to over do it that's why I wanted to know how I was doing, also I was put on the vitamin D because my level was 29 and I have ostioporosis in both knees and back, also I was diagnosed with hyperparathiyroidism so endo prescribed it for that too.. 🤷‍♀️

Test to see what level is NOW

Vitamin D

GP will often only prescribe to bring levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

One spray = 1000iu

It’s trial and error what dose we need,

Calculator for working out dose you may need to bring level to 40ng/ml = 100nmol
