Fluoride toothpaste

Hi

I’m using Durophat 5000 toothpaste , my teeth are weak despite calcium supplements I’m using this toothpaste to protect my precious teeth , I get a dry mouth due to RA too .

As I apply the Durophat topically to 2 particular teeth to add more protection I’m wondering if it’s inhibiting my Liothyronine?

Is their any fact based evidence that fluoride toothpaste inhibits absorption of T3

Much appreciated

😊

Hiya,

I'm not aware of any data to support your question but, fluoride is an halogen and, as such, can interfere with central nervous system of the body. Iodine is another halogen and is used by the body to make thyroid hormones and may be inhibited by the fluoride. I cannot give you any scientific proof other than it is my own research and as my memory recalls. Have you thought about putting calcium directly into your teeth? Eating calcium rich food, i.e. cheese puts calcium straight into the tooth. Perhaps, you could have a small piece of cheese after every meal to neutralise any acid in your mouth and put calcium straight into the tooth. It does not need to be large pieces just a match box size cut up into small pieces you could throughout the day. It's worth a try and you'll get the other added benefits from eating cheese, such as, protein.

TT x.

Thanks

I thought I’d read somewhere years ago that fluoride was bad for thyroid.

It’s not so much the acid on my teeth I’m concerned about but the fact that my mouth gets dry probably due to the RA as my eyes are also painfully dry.

The Duraphat is good for preventing tooth decay caused by dry mouth - I feel like I’ve been chewing sand sometimes 😖

Hiya,

It sounds awful. Are you on any medication that could cause dry mouth? My friend is on amytriptyline (an old antidepressant that's now used for pain relief and anxiety) and he gets really bad dry mouth and even froths at the mouth if he doesn't drink enough fluids. Or it could be Sjogren's syndrome. This is an autoimmune disease and people with hypothyroidism can develop it. I went sent to the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital for tests and was diagnosed borderline positive. This might be a possibility and you could get tested for it.

Why not use a remineralising toothpaste that contains hydroxyapatite?

SPLAT Biocalcium Toothpaste from Amazon is one I like there are many more.

I was given Duraphat too but I didn’t like using it. Make sure your Vitamin D levels are good and also take a Vitamin K2 MK7 supplement to direct calcium to bones and teeth.

Thanks for the tips 😁

I used Duraphat only because I had a tooth that needs refilling but couldn’t get in at the dentist , I’m still waiting to get it done to prevent more damage I went into the Duraphat . I’m rubbing it directly onto my tooth to help until

My appointment .

It seems to stay in your mouth ages afterwards I’m conscious about swallowing it Just thought I’d ask . The toothpaste you use , is it stronger than the ones you buy from the shops ? Thanks

Not sure what you mean by stronger. It’s good for sensitive teeth. It will remineralise the teeth and it’s safer than fluoride.
