I was recently diagnosed with Sjogrens Syndrome and I already have Hashimotos. On a trip to the dentist she prescribed a special toothpaste for the sjogrens but it is very high in fluoride. I seem to recall that this may not be good for my thyroid but not sure. Can anyone advise please? Thanks

Fluoride and thyroid
Problem you have is Sjogens makes you more prone to tooth decay which is why you have been prescribed the fluroide. However fluroide isn't good for the thyroid.
Are you on a low sugar and no processed food diet? If you eliminate added sugars - and nearly all processed food contains sugar though it is labelled under different names - you will reduce your risk of tooth decay.
Hello
No fluoride is not good for the thyroid. I use a fluoride free toothpaste from Holland and Barretts called AloeDent.

Me too, used fluoride free toothpaste for the past 10 years and rarely need a filling. As a matter of interest, myself and 3 other people I know have been prescribed this 'special' toothpaste from the dentist, none of us have sjogrens and I am the only one with Hashimoto's. I am told is costs about £20 a tube!
I use either the Kingfisher Fennel or Aloe-Dent, lovely non-gritty toothpaste and tastes nice and refreshing.
My OH was prescribed that fluoride Durophat toothpaste when he was being treated for throat cancer because the radiotherapy dries up all your saliva. He used it for 5 years and it absolutely made me cringe! Didn't make the slightest bit of difference. He still had a couple of teeth extracted because they had decayed from inside.
Don't get me started about fluoridation of water supplies! I live nearish to Southampton and a few years back there was a huge drive to fluoridate the water due to high childhood tooth decay. Well I'm sorry but parents really need to supervise their children to brush their teeth properly and stop bathing their teeth (milk or adult) in sugary juices and pop and take them for regular check-ups. Why should everybody else be forcefully "medicated" with a by-product of the aluminium smelting industry? The damage to the thyroid and other conditions such as fluorosis.
It got to such a state when it went to public consultation. Demonstrations, you name it. People were demanding the option of bottled non-fluoridated water or the installation of reverse osmosis machines in their homes!
Well people power won this time, thank goodness.
I strongly believe a lot more help in dental health can be achieved through optimal D3/K2.....get the calcium from our diets into our teeth! We really don't get enough sustained sunlight in this country and only for a few months is it beneficial. The message is slowly getting across (even the use of K2 as a cofactor) but underdosing seems to be the norm so back to square one.
