Best contraceptive with Hashimoto's/hypothyroidism?

I've only ever taken Cerazette and microgynon. Both seemed to cause mood issues like anger, volatility and depression, but I only took them at times in my life where I was hypothyroid but undiagnosed or undermedicated and had mood issues anyway. I recently thought it might be worth getting the copper coil instead to avoid the hormones, but I'm concerned about it making my periods very heavy (causing faintness and anaemia) and painful. Now I've added liothyronine my periods are a lot less heavy but they're still quite painful. I called my GP to enquire and was strongly advised to get the Mirena and told that because the hormones are administered locally and in a smaller amount than the pill, the systemic side effects are less. I don't trust doctors anymore and I'm aware that the medical profession pushes certain pharmaceutical products because it can mean less cost or more profit. I Googled Mirena and hypothyroidism and apparently there is a link between them. But I already have hypothyroidism so I'm not sure whether that matters. Can anyone advise me on a good method of contraception that won't make my existence unbearable other than condoms? Thanks!

When I stopped hormonal birth control (a naturopath suggested it) years ago, I started seeing an improvement in symptoms (I have Hashimoto's also). We have used condoms and fertility awareness methods. My cycles were regular though so it was quite easy. Didn't get pregnant until we actually started trying

Have you heard of Lady-Comp? It's an expensive one-off payment, but I went for it, as I can't tolerate pills or coils! lady-comp.co.uk/ I've only recently bought one, so I can't give you a full review yet I'm afraid!

Microgynon also badly affected my moods. I was then on Cilest for many years until they discontinued it.I've found the pill Cilique to be the best for me, but unfortunately with the pill it is a process of trial and error to see what works for you, different brands and different make ups.

I've just had 6 months of Lizinnia, which is meant to be the same as Cilique but that gave me very different side effects and I've been able to switch back, so even with the 'same' formula, you can react differently.

Unfortunately I can't comment on the coil, but would be interested in seeing the feedback you get on this.

I had Mirena for years without problems. The only thing that has changed my mood swings is being on NDT at a dose determined by me. I think it's likely that your thyroid could be undertreated leading to mood swings

There Ethylene Estrogen Based which is a Harsh Synthetic type.Have a look at likes of Zoley and Qlaira

I dont have hashi, or at least i dont think so, ive never been tested.

i currently have the copper coil and it has been really painful to begin with it was weeks before the period started, then settled to a week before then a couple of days until last month it was a pain-free period. this month ive has a lot of pain again. The bleeding each month has been really heavy as well. Before i start bleeding i feel very faint, i know when its away to start! I thought id try the copper coil for the same reasons as you said, the lack of hormones. I have had the combined pill and progesterone only pill and depo injections all in the past.

I'm not sure this helps!

Cilest worked well for about ten years. I had a break then couldn’t tolerate the lactose coating. I tried the patch which I loved but put on weight which took my BMI too high for it. I’ve just read a comment to say Cilest has been discontinued.

I had the coil for 18 months - Mirena. Loved it.

Thank you! Did you have it removed after 18 months? I'm guessing you didn't get it removed because it caused you issues...?

The strings got lost (not an issue did checked regularly) but my fibroids had grown which can render the coil in affective. But I’ve had gynae problems for years.
