I am 31 and for the last 2 months now I've been having extreme mood swings before my period. It's bad. Like crying for no reason, not wanting to live anymore, etc.
I've been taking levothyroxine for 1 year now for hypothyroidism.
Does this happen to anyone else that has thyroid issues, or is this just unbalanced hormones?
I'd like to be able to help my body even this out on it's own.

I suffer (and the rest of my family!) with mood swings, usually around a week before my period, lasting for a few days. I get depressed, (not to the extent of not wanting to live though), down but also have the shortest temper and have recently had some major shouty arguments with my 12 year old which I always feel so so guilty for. I'm not always like this so am putting it down to low t3 and possibly low ferritin too. I have had the feelings of hopelessness when under medicated and suffering with vitamin d deficiency at the same time.
Do you have any recent test results? Have you had any vitamin levels checked?
You not on your own I've been on since yesterday such horrible mood swings so depressed get really angry worse thing my periods r alot worse and come on twice a month my friend told me to take microgynon tablets to stop my period. going to try them. Will try anything right now feel so shitty.
Thyroid issues are unbalanced hormones. The thyroid makes thyroid hormones. And, if the thyroid hormones are unbalanced, the others are likely to be, too.
What do you mean by "I'd like to be able to help my body even this out on it's own."? Get your thyroid hormones optimised and the sex hormones will probably sort themselves out, too.
Herbally or holistically, not drugs. I'm afraid if I mention this to a Dr. that they'll label me as"mental illness" and not treat the underlying issue.
Not going to work, I'm afraid. You can't replace a hormone with a herb. You can only replace a hormone with a hormone - hormone replacement therapy is not drugs, no-one would ever give you drugs for hypothyroidism. You say you've been taking levo for a year, but are you on the right dose? I suspect not.
True, possibly, but that's not - I don't think - what the OP is saying. And, even then, it it worked better than - or even as well as - hormone therapy, I think we'd all know about it, don't you? If the OP is hypo and under-medicated, I very much doubt herbs of any kind are going to help.
There's a book (can be found secondhand) called Overcoming PMS The Natural Way by Marilyn Glanville. It is not a bad and there are some parts that look at thyroid and adrenal function which needs to be addressed. It talks about a supplement regime for PMS. These can help deal with sugar cravings and tired adrenals. However she does recommend St John's Wort which does not go well with Levo. Better to have plenty of p-5-p and Magnesium (also mentioned) co q 10 and deal with any candida infections which for someone with hypothyroidism we are more prone to.
