Test Result Help - NDT still major anxiety, depression, mood swings....

Hi,

Ive recently gone on to (Armour) NDT (6 weeks ago) and built up to 1.5 grains twice a day. Previously I was on Levo 75mcg and 19.5 mcg twice a day of T3 but never felt right with still being tired, anxious etc.... The change over was noticeable in the first couple of weeks but gradually Ive had serious anxiety, depression, mood swings, palpitations as well as intrusive and suicidal thoughts that linger for most of the day before dissipating. Ive just had my first bloods done which Ive attached, I'm wondering whether I have gone into Hyper with the low TSH but am looking for some advice as my private Dr is away. I know Im Hashimotos as well but can't stand how im feeling for most of the day anymore. Im taking 40mg Citolpram and have been for 3 years but it doesn't even touch the sides.

Any help much appreciated.

Best

Jamie

No, you haven't gone into hyper. A low/suppressed TSH on its own does not indicate hyperthyroidism. It has to be considered with the other two readings. And, as your FT3 is still in-range - although high - you are not over-medicated.

Taking 3 grains of NDT is bound to suppress your TSH due to the T3. That's what T3 does. But, it doesn't matter because you're taking T3 and therefore don't need TSH anymore.

However, whether or not your FT3 is too high for you, is another matter entirely. Have you tried reducing it slightly, to see if it makes you feel better?

Or, maybe you need more T4. Some people do. We have to fine tune our thyroid hormone, to see what works for us, so you could try adding in some levo - either to your 3 grains NDT, or to a slightly reduce dose.

One more thing, I'd need my B12 a bit higher than that. Perhaps you do, too. :)

Thanks Grey Goose once again,

I'll start taking my B12 again and im thinking of dropping to 1 grain in the morning and 1.5 in the afternoon, the problem is im still feeling tired and needing my nap, could this be due to the anxiety in the mornings?

Thanks

Jamie

More like the anxiety is caused by not being on the right dose. It's a symptom of both under and over-medication.

I wouldn't drop by that much, if I were you. Just a quarter grain at a time. :)

Just a thought but your Citolpram could be reacting with your recent increase of AT and causing some of what your feeling. I understand you have been on it for 3 years but maybe the AT increase was just enough to cause issues with the citolpram.

Hi Batty, I was pretty much put on Citalopram 3 months after starting my thyroid treatment as my mental health had got so bad. I went from 10mgs to 40mgs within 8 weeks, that was nearly 3 years ago and I have watched my mental health go from bad to worse. Apparently there is no known side effects from taking both but to be safe I take the citalopram at night, far away from my last does of NDT. I can't believe its actually doing anything bar giving the side effects, Ive never felt so bad.

I totally understand what your saying and maybe thats not what is affecting you and I did see another post in the daily's that someone talked about problems with AT (can’t recall the entire post) if you get the daily’s you should be able to see it. I found it and it was NDT recall notice.

Jamie For me the FT4 would be way too low and would be giving me symptoms - for me it would be sore throat, loss of voice and brain fog. I think that it is the balance of hormones that is wrong. I would suggest more T4 and less T3. Some of us need good levels of FT4 and only a small top up of T3 to make up for poor conversion.

Citalopram alters the working of the gut and can affect the absorption of thyroid meds. As a result you may need a slightly higher dose of thyroid hormones to compensate.

Go by how you feel as well as readings, and if you feel totally unwell see a doctor/Endo urgently. I had an experience of high anxiety, not sleeping, inflamed joints, passing urine through the night excessive thirst etc , these are symptoms of over medication, or a reaction to a filler that becomes more evident the higher the meds go. Sometimes we can be very sensitive to the meds something like a hair trigger thyroid. 25 mcg up and we could get these symptoms, 25 mcg down and we feel ok. See an endocrinologist. Also look up therapeutic overdose symptoms of your thyroid meds. and you will see for yourself. Take care

I had my vits checked and they seemed not to bad, Ill go back on my B12 and magnesium justo in case.

I was wondering because the B complex i was taking was making me ill. I seem to be very sensitive to fillers, just wondering if something else you are taking could be causing those symptoms.

What form of B6 does that B complex contain? If it has pyridoxine hydrochloride, that could be causing problems. Try one with pyridoxal-5-phosphate.

I'm not sure, I think it was the glycerol in it that affected me. I've found one now that doesn't have any fillers in at all which is a lot better.

Glad about that. Nonetheless, suggest you have a quick look at this post:

Hello, did you ever feel any better? I'm trying to tolerate NDT at the moment. Physically my body loves it, but it makes me intensely anxious 2.5hrs after taking it. I've only managed 1 grain but I'm really unhappy with it.

Not what you're looking for?
